Just watched some Thai news where a poor unfortunate girl lay splattered on the pavement after falling / jumping from a condo and of course the Thai tv had to show it allbeit pixilated....had to turn it off. There was a cartoon style full length movie and in it there were glasses of alcohol ... each one blurred out, an interview with a Thai lady who showed a little bit of cleavage which I would not have noticed had it not been blurred out, cigarettes blurred out etc. Yet, we can see 3rd rate Pi Lor drivel till the cows come home with blood dripping from every orifice, a Thai soapie is not complete without the obligatory rape scene, violence against women etc. etc. I don't normally complain about my host country but sweet jesus Thai media, get some perspective and appropriate sensitivity.

A couple of years back there was a soap running here in which a young guy kidnaps a girl he fancies and locks her up in a house on the coast where he then starts 'courting' her.

Over a few episodes she falls in love with him and by the time her parents turn up to rescue her she's ready to announce her engagement to her kidnapper.

It begs the question - what on earth kind of a message is this meant to be sending?

As the OP observes - Thai TV media - total crap.

No, there's none of that in British soaps is there? No man-on-man rape in a soap aimed at teens, no people being murdered in pubs, or buried under the patio, no hitman stabbings, violent murders, cover-ups, beating of women. No affairs, quickies in alleys or anything, all before the watershed......

Those would be topics for the BritVisa.com forum.

Maybe it's based on the 1954 musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" where the brothers kidnap seven girls just before winter sets in. They carry them off to their house up country where the towns people are unable to rescue them until Spring.

This movie was nominated for an Oscar for best movie in 1954

Comparing other Countries with Thailand is a weak argument, and certainly doesn't excuse the issue in any way.

The worst piece of TV footage I saw on Thai TV was when they showed CCTV coverage of a guy first shooting a security guard, then he dragged his girlfriend across the floor and shot her in the head as she begged for her life. I was absolutely gobsmacked when i saw it. The first showings, nothing was blurred out.

Ever wondered why there are so many gun crimes in Thailand?

Just watch Thai TV.

It's CopyCat crimes, and anyone that thinks that Soaps are harmless needs to study some Phsycology. Thai Soaps in particular are scripted with more than enough Aggression and Violent Confrontation. Who would let their children watch them, and not feel extreme concern?

Pure and simple Brainwashing, and at the risk of being flamed,IMHO that's where the Screaming Tantrums, and Unreasonable Behaviour originates from! and portrayed as being normal reactions.

This is a logical fallacy.

It has been shown that the effect of media is indirect not direct as you assert.

Children all over the world have tantrums. It's part of normal behaviour learning. Do you blame an American child having a tantrum and pushing boundaries on Thai soaps too?

Whether direct or indirect the end product is the same.

And presumably American Children would not have access to Thai Soaps,so a silly comparison, considering we are talking about Thailand.

I remember that footage, the guard was on the run at the time so they probably thought this justified showing it.

They could have just as easily showed stills of his face.

There are plenty of news sites that don't even disguise the gore, I will never understand it and just accept it like so much else.

Actually it is not a logical fallacy - ( If you disagree with that feel free to explain which of the logical fallacies you believe the statement falls under).

Meanwhile, in a discussion on the specific subject of Thai TV soaps, the argument that Soaps anywhere else in the world are flawed, hence by implication it is acceptable for Thai soaps to be flawed ( and criticism of Thai soaps not justified/not accepable) is a logical fallacy on several fronts.

How about all the teenagers using guns against each other, where's the influence from?

And the tantrums are from childhood through to fully grown adults.

Thai TV is certainly brainwashing them where violence and guns are the norm on a daily basis.

The effect of media to change people's thinking, choices and behaviour is not a matter of debate in the advertising industry.

Maybe that is a little unbalanced, in the Thai soaps there is always the Good and Bad people. The characters that are aggressive and violent always get their come-uppance. they normally end up getting killed or going to jail. The guy good and girl rarely do and they end up happy at the end of the movie. If anything, it may be a good influence on the Thai children and teenagers. I also think that the movies are mostly a reflection of what is already happening in society, with a lot of drama added.

In real life there are always the good and bad people too,

so who is influencing who, society or tv soaps?

Remembering that these soaps are on tv daily.

Sometimes I think I would like to have TV in the house; for sports and world news. But I can't figure how to block the Thai content, particularly the soaps, so I just continue to put it off - 10 years so far.

I think the soaps are trying to influence society for the good, but is fighting a losing battle. Thai society is starting to break down quicker and quicker with the western influence that is invading Thai society through the media and especially the internet. I think the breakdown in Thai society will become worse over the next few years.
