French tourist drowns off Samui beach

SAMUI: -- A 74-year-old French man drowned at the Chawaeng Beach of this tourist destination island, police said.

Pol Lt Col Theerawat Namsithan, a tourist police officer, said the French tourist drowned at about 6 pm.

He quoted witnesses as saying that the man was swimming when he was swept away by a two-metre-high wave along with a Malaysian man. However, rescuers managed to save the Malaysian tourist in time.
