PM calls on region to work together on common dangers

The Nation, Agencies

BANGKOK: -- The Asia-Europe Meeting summit wrapped up yesterday in Vientiane highlighting the need for more cooperation between the two regions on economic and financial matters and recognising risks for the future.

The chairman's statement - adopted after two-day meeting - encouraged countries from the two continents to share experiences in implementing regional crisis management arrangements, including the European Stability Mechanism, the Eurozone’s permanent rescue fund.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said countries in Asia and Europe would face many trans-border problems such as human trafficking and trans-border crime, while benefiting from regional connectivity.

Thailand has stepped up measures to prevent problems of increased population, particularly among vulnerable groups - giving them access to public health, education, capital and technology to uplift their living standards and well-being, she said.

Refugees and migration issues would be also included in the schemes in order to protect possible victims of human traffickers, she said.

Asean would learn from Europe's experience in managing risk in a region without borders, as the ten-member regional group now approaches becoming a community by 2015, she said.

Thailand had joined hands with other members of Asean to map out an action plan to cope with trafficking issues, Yingluck said.

The two regions, Asia and Europe, should work to forge more cooperation in tackling trans-border crimes and trafficking.

Yingluck proposed a post-2015 development agenda, with trained people at the centre for sustainable development. Development after 2015, when Asean becomes a community, must aim to reduce risk and be ready to handle natural disasters which could seriously disrupt the food chain and food security, she said.

Yingluck emphasised the role of women in sustainable development. Thailand has launched a Women's Development Fund and hopes for international support for her "Every Woman, Every Child" project to uplift mothers and children.

Still spreading her 'understanding'. Trained people? And a women's development fund? That will go a long way to increase understanding of what the Asia-European Meeting was all about (not). Please someone, throw this lot out on their collective ears...

I thought trafficking and trans border crime was already a problem in Thailand?

Closer co-operation between regional governments should help to alleviate the problem not increase it.

So the meeting is to consider and discuss the need for more cooperation between the two regions on economic and financial matters and recognising risks for the future and to share experiences in implementing regional crisis management arrangements, including the European Stability Mechanism, the Eurozone’s permanent rescue fund.

So The Asean community wants to share Thailand's experiences of crisis management?

And then the Thai PM nods wisely, saying, Yaa right! We get a lot of people we don't want coming across our borders so you'll be able to help us keep them out. And then, like, oh, years away you can help us with our flooding and tsunamis. And, gosh! Women need to be more important - I know I certainly do - so we'll make a start by uplifting them.

Hmmm . . . and . . . ?

"Asean would learn from Europe's experience in managing risk in a region without borders, as the ten-member regional group now approaches becoming a community by 2015, she said."

You can't compete Europe with the ASEAN member states. Without borders just means more drugs and more criminals from other countries for Thailand.

"Yingluck emphasised the role of women in sustainable development. Thailand has launched a Women's Development Fund and hopes for international support for her "Every Woman, Every Child" project to uplift mothers and children."

Are "Kathoeys" considered as woman, or only as haazip haazip?---w00t.gif

A region without borders? I may have missed something. Anyone who can give me a pointer to a clear description of what 'ASEAN 2015' means ?

Clearly she doesn't understand either. Is there freedom of movement for politicians too? Maybe Thailand cab expert a few and import some better ones.

"What a load if utter drivel."

Reference the esteemed posters..............

Asean isn't even going to be remotely like the EU in movement of labor. What is she going on about?

What has say people smuggling from eastern Europe got to do with companies trafficking in prostitutes, to companies importing illegal labor for190 baht a day versus 300.

Believe it or not, there aren't too many legal sweatshops in the eu. And the simple answer for this issue in Thailand is solve police corruption. As bad as people may say the corruption of law enforcement is in the eu, in comparison with Thailand?
