Popular Post Zatoichi Posted November 17, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2012 When I took my wife to the States, Philly & Miami, I was amazed at how, through her inexperience outside of Thailand, and her love of taking pictures, she reminded me of how beautiful these places are. She would stop and take pictures every were, notice every little detail, no complaining not picky or fussy, she just wanted to go out allot and see new things. I don't know were some of you guys are getting your women from, running around chasing ducks for food, and what not but I didn't see any of that so called 3rd world ignorance during our trip. 4
Popular Post MRGTINGTONG Posted November 17, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2012 Arrived in England 2007, showed how to cook or heat up food in microwave. 1 day heard massive bang, went to kitchen which was covered in egg bits and shell. She had put a whole egg in and turned the micro wave oven on, the egg exploded and blew the oven door off. She looked at me and said, "what happen". Took her 3 hours to clean up the mess. Classic 3
dantilley Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 She hadn't used a microwave before going to England?!?!
bdw Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 I could never train mine to use a DVD player and I can't respect ignorant people, so we ended it.
BigJohnnyBKK Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 (edited) She hadn't used a microwave before going to England?!?! I haven't used a microwave once in 14 years of being here myself. You guys have to realize that within this country there is as much difference between urban Thais and the country ones as there is between urban educated professionals working in downtown Johannesburg and those growing up among the San out in the middle of the Kalahari. OK bit of a stretch but the point remains. 8-) It isn't just one culture, in fact only a minority of Thais grow up with central Thai language as their mother tongue, most learn it in school, there are at least 75 different languages here, and even though the hilltribes have lived here for generations some of them before Thailand became a unified nation, they're treated as illegal aliens and given no schooling at all. Popular Post pgs Posted November 17, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2012 Mine's been away from home about 8 years. Took her to Europe before coming to AU. Winter in Europe was great - first time in snow, making snowmen, ganging up with my cousins on me in a snowball fight. This was a lass who wouldn't walk the 200m to her mum's, but would go through the effort to get out the 50cc motorbike & start it... i was so much quicker to walk. Being the heartless peson I am, she was co-erced into climbing the stairs in the Arche de Triumph - amid much complaining about how far it is. View was worth it to her though. Highlight in Paris was standing next to Mona (Lisa) for a pic. Any movie with Paris, all I hear is 'been there, been there...' Poker machines were a fun learning curve as she won reasonably the first few times. Wouldn't accept the idea of quitting when ahead until she lost $70 from a $2 start. The last 2 years, my work has had me tour NSW for a few weeks at a time, so she comes for the ride - and helps install the PCs. She understands enough of what she's doing to tell me to leave her do it unless she gets stuck. Of course, all cabling must look pretty. In those trips, she has seen more of NSW than she has of TH in the preceding years. Highlights: Seeing a sheep being shorn & emus near the road. Initially there was no interest in emus, as we have a farm of them near the village. Seems ostriches - which the farm has - are the same thing, big chickens. She has never seen the MAD MAX movies, but when in Broken Hill for a few days, she hit on the idea of going to Silverton to see the cars (Silverton is where MM2 was made) & hotel. Never understood why the interest, just accepted it - so much easier. She had to be trained to use a microwave when she came here, now she's fine with it. It's just the recipes that are a problem. 1 2/3 of a cup of water apparently means to put in 1, 2 or 3 cups as you wish. This resulted in a few rather sloppy cakes. She still won't eat lamb or turkey because they are 'too strong' - but eats durian... To borrow from Mike Baird (altered slightly) - Thai logic could make a farang head explode. 4
NeverSure Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Great thread. Thanks everyone. If I take a gal to the US, if at all possible I'll land in Portland, OR, rent a car, and make a loop through the Columbia Gorge swinging up and back to Mt. Hood (will she ever again see a 14,000 ft mountain with permafrost?), on through to the sagebrush desert, and whatever else I had time for. I wouldn't want to just drop her into the Midwest or Florida or something. If that's not possible then I'd make it something like Denver and the Rockies. I could do any of that easily in a day. Thanks again. Carry on. 1

Chittychangchang Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 "Why do they have ice-cream vans when it's freezing cold here?" to which my reply was " Why do you have chilli there when it is so hot there." I think her point was more valid than mine. 1
Songhua Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 some are talking here like they walked out of the stone age. Yes, it cracked me up watching her trying to take the bone out of her nose just before customs.... Sent from my PC36100 using Thaivisa Connect App Yeah, my wife didn't even blink when she saw the woolly mammoth in Sydney but she was surprised at how much more orderly the traffic was, how 'quiet' the streets were (boring I think she called it), eftpos cards and phone payment, the relative ease of getting the smallest matter organised and how much our kids were learning at school. Once she'd discovered all that, she started questioning why I was still dragging her around by the hair. That was twenty years ago of course and, no, she hadn't ever used a microwave, driven a car before or seen a heater. Not so strange really, considering she'd never before had any need to use a microwave, drive a car or use a heater. 2

You can see Mt Hood from Portland (PDX). Then you can drive right through the Gorge, going from wet and green Pacific Northwest in PDX, past Mt. Hood, Past Multnomah Falls, (all the while you're cutting through the Cascade Mountains of which Mt. Hood and the Falls are a part) and while still in the Gorge enter the dry E. Oregon sage bush desert. The Cascades catch the rain from the coast, and leave E. Oregon dry. That drive is only 80 miles and all freeway on I-84. Pick your own way home but reversing sees different views and it's worth a second look. IIRC Multnomah Falls is about 600 feet high. Below you can see Mt. Hood from the rainy side - PDX, drive through past Mt. Hood and the Falls to desert and look back at Mt. Hood - all in just more than an hour from PDX. 3
macksview Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 took the wife to the temple shortly after she arrived, i asked her how it was,ha sip ha sip she said, slightly crestfallen i asked why 50/50, 50 per cent hi-so student gang and 50 per cent galee gang, was the content of her reply.
macksview Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 wife had been in her job for a few months, when a japanese girl joined the company,a delivery driver arrived, a man not known for his personal hygiene, one of the other girls, said to my wife "not that bogan", as he bought in the boxes, the japanese girl in all in her japanese politeness said "hello mr bogan my name is ...". 2
BigJohnnyBKK Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Using individual glasses for drinking rather than everyone sharing a bowl dipped into the rainwater urn. Even children - very dangerous!
David48 Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 She hadn't used a microwave before going to England?!?! My gf's Family only bought one for the first time this year. Before they thought that the 'evil energy' in the microwave changed the physicial properities of the food and could give you cancer. Remember Thai's fodness for the spititual world. It's all a learning curve ... BTW ... I see it as their innocence ... and not that they are regressive. 2
David48 Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 I could never train mine to use a DVD player and I can't respect ignorant people, so we ended it. I hope that you and your DVD player are still very happy ... .
BigJohnnyBKK Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Before they thought that the 'evil energy' in the microwave changed the physicial properities of the food and could give you cancer. Such belief isn't limited to silly Thais. Link, and googling will find many more.
bdw Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 I hope that you and your DVD player are still very happy ... She hocked the DVD player soon after I left. I'm much happier alone than being with a person who couldn't learn a simple task.
BigJohnnyBKK Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 The DVD thing is completely bizarre, every girl I've taken has been a very quick study with anything tech, in fact often the parts of their English vocabulary wrt reading that build up the fastest are the menu items in the software I teach them - mostly Internet and multi-media download/conversion, but later Word Excel etc. One's become a quite competent website developer, bare-metal html-css not any wysiwgy crap either. My four-year-old has it completely down just demonstrated once or twice, pause fast-forward chapters change language menu to special features the lot. Be more selective in your choice of partners is all, unless you specifically prefer subnormal for some reason. Me I require high native intelligence and hard-working ambition - in addition to the physical attractiveness of course.
bdw Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 The DVD thing is completely bizarre Yes. I thought so too. At first I chalked it up to ignorance, but then I had to realize it was stupidity or possibly just a laziness that went so far as to unwillingness to learn.
macksview Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 fantastic bdw,the wife will love that one and good for all tv members who were going to have to use the net to translate bogan. i do believe that video should be used for all immigrants coming to australia, instead of kanagroos, beaches and nice looking people, show them that. maybe the boats would stop, downtown kabul might look more appealing. 1
Popular Post Hog Head Posted November 18, 2012 Popular Post Posted November 18, 2012 Took Mrs Hoghead out on my boat to the Northern BC Coast on her first visit to Canada. The trip itself had several classic moments including fishing. Went salmon fishing and she could not get over the concept that you could only keep 4 a day, and had to punch the number of big springs on your license. Having a license was a novel concept in itself. The best was when I recycled the salmon carcasses into a big commercial crab trap, next tide change up it came and the look on her face and squeals of joy upon seeing the trap plugged with Dungeness crabs was priceless. Almost as priceless as when I started throwing back the females and even having a tool to measure for undersize. She soon caught on however that it came up full every day so not so miffed about throwing them back. Not so keen on my method for killing and cleaning crabs but no qualms about eating them. She still looks the other way when I pull in a fish and dispatch it. The thrill of the first snow lasted a short time and then it became so much nicer to watch through the winter. You can drive in snow? The house has a big heater? Where is the aircon Your truck does not have aircon? Why is the traffic so orderly? You have to pump your own gas? The water is so cold You can drink the water? This met with great suspicion Deer in the yard was not too threatening as they are cute, but the black bear right outside the bedroom window one morning was a bit more of a shock Blackberries grow wild and nobody picks them? You have to pay tax to live in your own house? You have a car repair workshop at home? On and on it goes but I am sure you have heard it all 5
