Officers in Pattaya’s Children, Youth and Women’s protection unit received a tip off that an illegal abortion clinic was once again operating in a 4 floor building on Third Road, in the Central area of Pattaya City. A team of Police and welfare specialists were sent to the premises armed with a warrant.

On the ground floor of the building, which advertises itself as a Wellness and Pregnancy centre called Wetchagam, the officials were met by Miss. Chitra, a 21 year old receptionist and a 31 year old Motorcycle taxi driver.

The officials were, however, well versed with the way these places operate, and putting the two of them under arrest. Other officers went up to search the other floors which contained various consulting rooms, eventually finding an Abortionist who had just that moment completed the task of removing a 5-6 month foetus from a 20 year old girl. ( in the interest of decency we have NOT posted the more graphic photographs but other are posted below)

The 45 year old Abortionist, Somchai Bowasang, is a known repeat offender in Pattaya’s legal justice system having been arrested for similar acts in the past on numerous occasions and charging from 10,000 up to 70,000 baht for the operation, dependant on the age of the foetus at the time of its abortion.

In the crudely prepared room officers found un- named drugs stored in bottles which were given to girls to cause a miscarriage. In the event that the drugs failed, the woman would carry out the termination manually, as in this case, in the shophouse room. She has been arrested for the same crime on numerous occasions and always escaped with a a fine and caution.

Disgusting is quite right. Charging up to Bt70,000 is more than disgusting, considering the Planned Parenthood Foundation under royal patronage only charges about Bt3,000 for a professional suction termination.

The only problem (for some) with making abortion more freely available in Thailand is that the number of bar girls would reduce with fewer females being abandoned by their Thai husbands after getting pregnant looking for work.

You should not be surprised to know that many of the babies at the orphanage in pattaya are luk kung (1/2 Thai). What might surprise you is that the majority of the volunteers there are young, western women.

You should not be surprised to know that many of the babies at the orphanage in pattaya are luk kung (1/2 Thai). What might surprise you is that the majority of the volunteers there are young, western women.

im not appalled by the notion of abortion, im appalled that a hack can make excellent money in an illegal clinic while women are denied safe sterile procedures in hospitals

Yes. I fully agree that this procedure should be made available in the safe and sterile public hospitals off Thailand. It is quite sad that women are given few alternatives in this country.

Of course I by no means think that abortions are an alternative to good education, family planning, and birth control.

Illegal Central Pattaya Abortion Clinic raided by Region 2 Police

PATTAYA:--For the 5th time, a Central Pattaya Clinic which performs illegal abortions has been shut-down, for now, by Region 2 Police.

Officers from the Child and Women Protection Unit based at Banglamung Police Station obtained a search warrant from the Pattaya Provincial Court in relation to the clinic located at the Central Pattaya section of Third Road.

On Saturday afternoon Police raided the clinic and were met by the receptionist and a motorbike taxi driver who works at a rank in Soi 5 off Jomtien Beach Road and is paid 500 Baht for every client taken to the clinic . Both were detained until officers made their way through the entire 4-storey building.

On the top floor, Police detained Khun Somjai aged 45, the owner of the clinic, who had herself been arrested several times in the past relating to the operation of abortion clinics. Lying on mattress in one of the recovery rooms was a 20 year old woman who had just undergone an abortion. The aborted fetus which is thought to have been in its 5th month of gestation had been placed in a black refuse bag in preparation for disposal among domestic refuse left at the front of the building.

It is known that the clinic charges between 10,000 and 65,000 Baht for abortions. The first step is to administer powerful medication which can cause miscarriage. If this drug is not successful a surgical abortion procedure is carried out
