webfact
Sneaky Thieves Foiled In ATM Machine Heist Thieves used a vehicle to drag an ATM from the front wall of a deserted Pahtumthani restaurant during New Year’s Eve. But they were apparently unable to pry open the ATM, which they abandoned. The bandits also laid homemade spikes along 700 meters of the road to deter vehicles. PATHUM THANI – December 31, 2012 [PDN]; at 3 a.m., a report of ATM being dragged from the front of a restaurant by a pickup truck was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Kwanchart Jaemjamras, inspector on duty at Khubangluang police station. The ATM machine of Siam Commercial Bank had been anchored in front of the Dee Potchana restaurant in Tambon Khukwang, Amphur Ladloomkaew, Pathumthani province. The restaurant owner is Mr. Nopporn Khaokharm, the Lord Mayor of Tambon Khukwang. At the scene, police discovered the ATM lying in the middle of the road in front of the restaurant. The machine had been damaged, and attempts had been made to pry it open. The money box inside reportedly contained 2 million baht. Police were waiting for the bank officer to inspect the damaged ATM and report any losses. The police found that the thieves had scattered home-made spikes along a 700-meter stretch on the road leading to the restaurant, apparently to deter any vehicles from approaching. The spikes were made of long nails nailed through wooden planks and sticking out the other side. The police and civil defense volunteers assisted to remove the spiked planks from the road. Police questioned a local resident, identified as Mr. Passaphol Veerasitthichok, age 38, the fireman of Tambon Ra-haeng municipal. He told police he had just finished work and was driving past the incident point, when he saw a red pickup truck parking next to the damaged ATM. So he stopped to check. The pickup truck driver told him that he saw the ATM machine in the middle of the road. So he got out of his truck to check, and discovered that it was the ATM machine of SCB bank. So he notified the police of Khubangluang police station. Popular Post GentlemanJim
The 6 P's comes to mind! After going to the trouble of ripping the thing off a wall you would think that they had mastered the technical issue of the important bit.........getting inside the machine to the money box. Seems like another plan dreamt up over a bottle of cheap whiskey, then off they go into the truck to do the dirty deed....or not. Seems there is something in the fact of an all intelligent being equipping the Human race with a gene pool selection process.

"Seems there is something in the fact of an all intelligent being equipping the Human race with a gene pool selection process." Probably less to do with the gene pool and more to do with them being inspired by the two British half-wits who tried the same thing last June ... with the same result. PATTAYA – June 29, 2012 [PDN]; Pol. Lt. Gen. Panya Mamen, commissioner section 2 and Pol. Maj. Gen. Jamnong Rattanakul, Commissioner Chonburi province reported the arrest of two British suspects charged with stealing ATMs.The two suspects said that they could not get the money out of the ATMs because they did not know how to open them and after yanking the ATM units out of the wall the alarm went off. The duo panicked and left the scene in a hurry. http://www.pattayada...iled-atm-heist/ Edited January 1, 2013 by Suradit69

ThaiKiwi
From Time magazine: ATM theft, it appears, is this recession’s hottest crime. There were more than 100 instances of teller machine robberies in Texas alone in 2010. In San Diego, thieves have snatched or attempted to make off with ATMs 28 times in the past year. That’s up from 2 cases of the crime in the year before. In Atlanta, which has also seen a spike in ATM crime, as many as 35 machines have disappeared this year, up from 12 in 2009. “The suburbs are starting to see some ATM thefts, too,” says Archie Ezell, a supervising gang investigator in the Atlanta Police Department. “This is definitely a crime that has some legs.” Read more: http://business.time.com/2010/10/07/more-thevies-are-making-total-atm-withdrawls/#ixzz2GjUCcRny
disagree
The 2 stupid Brits got out after 2-3 months in September. So why not? If the jail term is just as short, there's gonna be a few more broken ATMs on the streets. More lucrative than drug trade... if you can get the stuff out of course :-) Edited January 1, 2013 by disagree

lujanit
I have no knowledge about ATM's except that it might dispense some loot if I ask it nicely, however surely every ATM has a GPS tracker. Stealing one should just lead the cops to where-ever/it/you are.

bendejo
The fact that the crooks did not get stymied by their own road spikes makes them criminal masterminds by Thai standards, absent the fact that they didn't think to lift the machine up and it put it on the pickup bed to haul it away and bust it up elsewhere. Maybe it was already occupied by the family
