I have found out that Skype don't work, or work bad because of blocking by many ISP. Anyone know if there is any monthly based 3G subscription of any ISP in Thailand that does NOT block Skype?

Strange, i do have a true-account with an aircard to my laptop and that i can Skype very well on. When i got another account for my SonyEricsson and skype there was so much lag that it did not work. When i connect the phone to WiFi it does work well so i don't think its the telephone. My guess what that true lagged the call in order to get me pay them for the overseas call.

My friends in Thailand have used Skype on Android and iPhones for international video calls to me from several different places in Thailand. It worked just fine with different ISPs. Video image transmission was only hindered by the general condition of the local Internet signal. Offs brand of Android phones may not be Skype compatible. I have seen some Android phones require a operating system update to become Skype compatible. Those Android phones without both front and back cameras are not practical for Skype video use. DTAC seemed to be quite weak and would bomb out and not provide good service. True Move seems to work quite well. Using Skype video with Smartphones in Thailand requires a Wifi connection for good reception. Otherwise the video connection just does not work well.

IMHO True Move H (3G) is blocking Skype. I use True Move on Phangan with very good speed of 6-10 MB and all incoming calls even with video are perfect. Only outgoing calls have no sound (but video still running). It is not a technical problem, as it works fine, if I switch to a local WLAN connection. So my assumptions is, they try to block outgoing calls. Incoming calls are not so easy to block, as Skype uses common Ports like 80 or 443 as well.

I'm not sure why TrueMove H would block Skype? Why would they care how you use your bandwidth. I mean, you could use a calling card, with free local access - so no revenue to TrueMove H - and pay much less than using Skype, when you factor in the cost of the mobile 3G connection.

What make/model phone do you have?

Which TrueMove H mobile data plan do you have?

I assume you have 3G?

What is your monthly data allotment? What is your fair-use speed cap?

A FuP speed cap of 64 Kbps or even 128 Kbps would preclude Skype audio calls. Going through the TrueMove H private IP network might introduce excessive jiter and/or latency making VoIP calls challenging.

Have you contacted TrueMove H? IF so, what did they say?

Wife uses Skype on her smartphone (Galaxy S4) with True at work and TOT at home no problems however, if she receives a call then the skype conversation seems to freeze. Sometimes happens when she receives messages using LINE.

I use an iPad4 with Skype-App and True Move H (3G) with 2GB, but the probelms occured while usage was only 200MB from 2GB, so not a problem of fair usage. Generally I use 3G only when leaving the house, so I never reach the limit of 2GB within one month.

Like I said incoming calls are always o.k. and for outgoing calls I have a good video, but no sound.

But if this is a client problem, why the app is working fine with WLAN (TOT) and why there are no jitters for incoming calls with 3G?

I thought, True may block Skype calls to force customers to use (their) cell phone connection. But maybe you are right and thats quite a stretch.

I keep an eye on that ;-)

I'm not sure that Makhao and kaffeburk have the same issues/problems?

It sounds like Makhao can use Skype Video calling over 3G but receives no audio from the far-end? Is that correct? Can the far-end receive your audio? Does this happen with every call? Who, where what are you calling? Can you make audio-only Skype calls?

I interpret kaffeburk's issue to be one where they cannot originate/receive a Skype audio call when on TrueMove H 3G.

Obviously if people can provide as much clear, concise detailed information, solutions/work-arounds might be forthcoming.

Skype has a testing service which is always the first thing to try when there is a problem.

Sometimes, routing skype calls into the normal Thai mobile network can result that one side cannot hear the other side. It is a Thai specific problem, but in recent months I found it quite reliable.

Skype to skype should work fine, if both sides have 3G or ADSL.

Are you sure video is running at the other end? I have seen cases where the uploading device on a skype connection cannot transmit voice or video, but *can* receive voice and video. It's upload -vs- download speeds. Mobile ISP's only quote download usually... ;)

I use Skype everyday for business purposes and also for private calls, I might say I talk over Skype 1 or 2 hours per day.

While using 3G in Koh Phangan (in Chaloklam and on several places at the west coast) I experienced this phenomenon permanently and like I said, both sides had video running fine and we are grimacing about it, but cannot hear each other.

The video conferences happened only on skype connections, of course, but I had the same problem while talking to landline phones (what I usually do), that mean they couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear them.

With WLAN I have no complains at all about Skype, but that is of course also depending on the internet line, that you use. I am currently at Koh Samui with 20mb fiberline from tot, thats results most of the time in excellent voice quality.

After so much feedback in this thread (thanks!) I guess, I have to make more checks, when I come to Phangan next time, because at Samui I never had such problems with Skype and 3G. Uups: That makes my first guess untenable! If True Move blocks Skype, it surely would do that not only at Phangan, but also at Samui. Sorry, folks. Looks like, there must be another reason for that behaviour.

Would be interesting to find other 3G-users at Phangan, who use Skype...

After moving from Samui to Phangan I can now reassure, that 3G from True Move H is supporting Skype at Samui and Phangan as well. The problems I encountered in summer seemed to be unique it never happened again.

There are other programs that you can use for calling free. Tango and Viber work well. I hate Skype such a bloated app on Andriod (although its gt better more recently). Skype were great until Ebay bought them and then all the techs seemed to leave. Now they are owned by M$. Tango video is really good. Viber is very lean, especially on 3G.

You can also use sip; sometimes the Andriod sip menu is hidden, but you can open it up with Sip Switch Widget smile.png

Some other things about mobiles in general. You have a mobile switching center; this groups all cells and infrastructure into an area. You may find one mobile switching center is configured differently to another (eg using a different vendor Alcatel versus Ericsson versus Huawei). Even the cells may be configured differently, using different vendors, etc. So you can't just say it works on say Dtac but not on AIS; it really depends on where you are and the local cell/switching center setup. If tech were easy it would not employ so many people or pay the money people earn ;)

There are lots of app to app calling apps no need to even ask, but for all to a land/mobile number I much prefer Vonage app. Cheap rates and a lot better calling quality comparing to Skype. Skype makes people sound a bit like robots while on Vonage everyone sounds natural. Plus no hiccups on slower connection (like when you're out of quota and have an unlimited at a lower speed)?
