tim armstrong
Does anyone have experience of growing dates here?. I just saw a video of a Thai farming operation somewhere near Changmai, that looked very organised. I thought it would be too wet and humid, but apparently not so. BlueSmurf
Did'nt believe dates would grow hete as they need to be pollunated by a particular fly that does not live here.. Unless I read an April fools day spoof?
xen
About two years ago i went to the "House and Garden " Exhibition at Impact Centre and there were a couple of nurseries dealing with date palms.I Haven't any details any more but i think they were based around Korat. The owner of one of the nurseries spoke passable English and he had several varieties that were being developed for the Thai climate. I nave seen many of the dwarf date palm (phoenix roebeleniii ) growing as ornamentals in BKK so the phoenix spp will survive. As for fruiting i think they can mechanically pollinate the flowers/fruit . There was a topic posted on TV a few years ago on this subject so do a search. rice555
Hello All, if you play around with the TV search function on the farming forum, you you can see some pics of(I think) soidog2's date trees and some growing info. Sat. I went shopping downtown Korat and bought a Ag Mag because it had info on growing melons, but it also has 4-5pgs article on growing dates. Look at the picture! rice555
tim armstrong
Thanks guys, very useful. I'm still on the trail of the wife's doco. Unfortunately all in Thai, but easy to follow the ideas. I will post again if I find out more.
Mosha
I remember seeing something about them on a discovery channel. The farmer had 1 male plant to 100 female trees. He was hand pollinating them
