PM assigns security agencies to consider pros & cons of limited far South curfew

BANGKOK, Feb 7 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday assigned the country’s security agencies to consider the pros and cons of imposing a curfew in the most-troubled areas of the southern border region.

Ms Yingluck said today she had asked the agencies and the authorities at work in the areas to evaluate such a possibility, the advantages and disadvantages of a curfew, to respond to Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung’s idea he floated yesterday.

The premier said that she wanted the agencies concerned to work in unison and the government planned to hold a cabinet meeting in the region.

Mr Chalerm said on Wednesday that curfews might be imposed at dusk in some areas in the deep South which have been repeated targets of militant attacks.

The deputy premier said a decision on the limited curfew was not concluded as it needed discussion among agencies concerned, including the National Security Council (NSC), the military, police and local residents.

He stated his belief that the curfew would not be an imposition on local residents, and that it would be decided at a security meeting on Friday.

Mr Chalerm added that if the curfew did not work, he would revoke the measure.

Meanwhile, Fourth Army Region Commander Lt-Gen Udomchai Thamsarorach declined to comment a possible curfew, saying that his command has done its best to provide security in the insurgency-torn region, and that it was not necessary to revise the security plan.

Boonsom Thongsriprai, chairman of the Federation of Teachers in Three Southern Border Provinces declined to comment on the curfew, saying the issue was sensitive, with varied pros and cons. The most important thing, he said, was the local residents' views and their demands should be taken into consideration.

The issue should be considered carefully and be suitable for each area, he said.

Once a curfew is decided and implemented, Mr Boonsom said, the teachers’ federation would discuss how to react to the measure. (MCOT online news)

Intrepid insurgents in the region hunched round the planing table debating where to strike next.

Hang on effendi's we can't go and plant our booby trap bombs on the road now as we are under curfew and we musn't go out at night.

Let's see,, shall we crank up a few more broad daylight assaults as the military , the para military and the plods will be cream crackered as they've been up all night stopping us going out to play at night ?

Strikes me it that if brains were dynamite neither Chalem nor Madam Puppet Prime Minister Yinluck between them couldn't generate enough energy to blow their noses.

Wonder if Chalerm can actually tie up his own shoelaces without falling over yet ?

The curfew in parts of South Korea didn't end until the 80's - the good o days - getting locked into a night club full of women from midnite to 5am. Not as bad as is sounds - hell of a recuiting move.

How many attacks occur at night?

How effective will a curfew be against people who are already evading security forces quite well?

PM sending security agencies to consider pros and cons...!!.....Am I missing something here?....What exactly does she need to consider?...I mean it really appears pretty simple to me..

...One goup of people are blowing up things and killing other people.

..Either bring the army down and clean house or cut your loses and hand over the land

Maybe I'm being simplistic but aren't the vast majority of killings when people are either at work or travelling to and fro?

But as at this morning the 'experts' on Chalerms side had it all sorted - why'd the PM go and stick her nose into it? Oh sorry - the puppet master must have Skyped...

They do not want to fix the situation!!...

Until the international audience starts to make bigger and stronger objections....they'll just keep on bumbling along trying to make excuses and suggesting half hearted responses.

Yet again.

Will Chalerm now make a day time visit to the affected areas (once the curfew is in place) to discuss the southern insurgency problems instead of going back to Malaysia for meetings?

Well a lot of the Pros are in Pattaya, Soi Cowboy and Nana while most of the Cons seem to start in Parliament.

But hang on this is about the South.
