Posted March 2, 2006 Share Posted March 2, 2006 In my opinion, there aren't any very good Indian restaurants in Thailand, however, the Royal India across from the Porn Ping Hotel, near the Night Bazaar, is not bad and the Indian veggie place on Moon Muang soi 9 will scratch your itch. Meat and veggie. The atmosphere is great. The food is fairly tasty, but not authentic. Too expensive for the food being "off" from the real deal. But think about how much they charge, Id rather get a Baht10 made vege with rice. Royal India <--- as close as it gets. Not bad for the money. Bombay something <--- havent been there but heard its good. New restaurant. Somewhere near Chiang Mai Gate. Stall at night bazaar <--- thought that its gone now. The kalare food center if thats what we are referring to. Vegetarian Indian Res at MM Soi9 <--- nothing but potatoes being served. Indian Restaurants in Thailand <--------- I have to disagree with Ulysses. Bangkok has numerous good indian restaurants. One of the best (not cheap) would be Rang Mahal at Rembrand Hotel. Put together the atmosphere of being on the roof top and live indian singers on the Tabla and Harmonium, the money's worth it. Disclaimer: Only opinions. Please refrain from flaming! I can believe that there are some good Indian resteraunts in the UPPER price range that I don't know about. I normally go for middle-priced unless a higher priced one is highly recomended. Particularly like their lunchtime Thali platters. Don't go for atmosphere though. One of the least salubrious restaurants I know. Turn left into Soi 9, keep going to 20 metres past the dogleg in Soi 9, around New Zealand hotel. Authentic, run by a Sikh couple, not everything always available. Around B30 a plate. This is not a flash restaurant like Rare Earth, and is similar to Royal India. There's another vegetarian restaurant if you turn right (north) at the dogleg, also OK on my single visit. Rare Earth. My opinion - Rip off, with lousy Indian food. It's also vegetarian. If you are Hindu by inclination, or want to attend a Hindu religious ceremony, you may like to visit the Hindu temple on Tuesday nights at around 7.30. There is an excellent (free) Indian vegetarian meal after. It's on Rattanakosin Rd, and is wrongly labelled Dev Mandir Chinese temple on Nancy Chandler's map. There's another on the left near the entrance to Soi 4 Th Kotcasparn (the outside part of Moon Muang) near Thapae Gate. And those in the US become unworthy altogether. Indian food in penang, is different. Its mostly South Indian. The ones in Chiang Mai is mostly Northern Indian. Big Big difference. And to tell you the truth. Nothing like rice on banana leaf, with fish curry soaking in it, a fried mackerel fillet, mutton masala, some pappadum and little vege to go with it. Gulp that down with some coke and it makes your day seems worth living just for food ! .. Dosai anyone?? ###### it, we need a south indian restaurant here in chiang mai. seriously. The Sikh family are lovely as most Sikhs I know but quite frankly the food is lukewarm and mediocre.Food:2.5/10 Ambience:8/10 Royal India Food:3.5/10 Ambience: 2/10 There is a fairly good Indian in Anusan Market, but not much fun. Yes, it feels closer to an Indian restaurant than any of the others, but the food is poor. Arabia (in Anusarn) is overpriced and pretty bland. Plus, the shag-happy soi dogs that congregate in the car park opposite make for a foul backdrop. Asma (also in Anusarn, next to OMalleys). I used to go for the chicken keema - not particularly good, but the nearest to a staisfying Indian dish I've had. Run by a charming Gurkha chappy who fled Burma Soi 9 - Owners don't get much nicer than this. Unfortunately, after a couple of visits, the menu is exhausted. Above McD's and Bombay - have yet to try. Any info? I've tried to find Bombay on several occassions but no joy. Better directions would be appreciated. Am inclined to agree with another poster on Indian food in the region: in Burma, fantastic food at the Aroma restaurants in Bagan and Inle; in Luang Prabang I always eat at Nazim's (either of the two); in Saigon, both Saigon Indian and Ashoka are winners and in Singapore and Malaysia, the choice is fantastic. French food with llots of "Hello Welcome" all around. was their alot of christmas,must of got the name wrong.two up from marlin bar.ambience is ok,bars leave you alone once you in there.very good food.i know the bar next door used to have @go go@ upstairs,but not anymore. The place on Soi 9 is probably the worst Indian I have ever had. It was a plate of what tasted to me like lukewarm baby food, a big pile of mush. I think Asma is overpriced and the portions are too small. We ordered samosas and only got one on the plate. Usually you get three. Our other orders were too small as well. Believe it or not the guesthouse across the street at the corner there on Soi 9 serves pretty decent Indian. The only truly good Indian food I have found in Thailand was in Bangkok, on Sukumvit, Soi 3. But I guess that doesn't do us much good here in CM. I really liked that one, and the price was very right.. Any idea if they moved somewhere, or that the Galare Food Center will be back in some shape or form? up-country_sinclair Posted March 12, 2006 Share Posted March 12, 2006 (edited) i went to TAJ last night for dinner, but i'm not in a hurry to return as the food was just OK. i also found it to be a bit pricey.... 2 mango lassis parkora appetizer two vegetarian main dishes 2 plates of rice 1 nan just under 600 baht. chiang mai is a long way from penang in more ways than one.
