I don't recall needing one when I got mine.

If you have pension or social security income, then an Embassy letter verifying the amount is required. Otherwise, a Thai bank letter showing the required assets is all that is needed.

Medical Certificate of good health, of course.

I am applying for a retirement visa. Do I need to get a letter from my embassy stating that I wish to retire here?

I was given conflicting information on this.

thanks,

No, unless you are applying under the pension income option, although that is not exactly an expression of wish per se.

If you go the cash in the bank route, there is no need to involve your embassy in any event.

Thank you.

I ask the question because information from our own thaivisa website gives the following as one of the retirement visa requirements:

"Letter from your embassy saying you wish to retire in Thailand For an applicant who is over 50 years old, proof of a sum of 800,000 baht in a Thai bank OR an income of not less than 65,000 baht per month must be presented - OR a combination of balance in the bank and a monthly income. Example: 400,000 Baht in the bank and 32,500 Baht coming in every mon"

http://thaivisa.com/318.0.html

Maybe I am misinterpreting this sentence, but to me, it means that we do need a letter from the embassy under any conditions.

I will find out tommorrow when I go down to immigration.

I applied in Nan immigration and they required a letter from the Embassy stating my adress in Thailand.

This was on top of the bank balance letter

It does not seem to be required in other immigration offices

In Mae Sot. Nothing from Embassy required for retirement extension, that is with 800k plus in Bank of course.
