Malaysia On Tuesday; Someplace Very Quiet

Featured Replies

Walking across the border into Malaysia next week.

I'm finishing up a project and the multiple trucks sitting outside the "Campaign Headquarters" for the appropriately named "Number Two" candidate, who lives one house down from me, are set on distort and are challenging my ability to live up to my name.

Hence, I will cross the border and immediately begin looking for a quiet, beach. I don't care about services (other than a reasonable restaurant and a cheap bungalow). I'm not interested in sightseeing or partying, this is a "working vacation" that requires serenity.

Having said that, budget accommodations are desired as I'll be staying a month.

I can go down the coast a ways.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Actually, doesn't have to be a beach. A clean, quiet town (with internet) would do nicely.

Which border crossing?

Assume your are crossing at Padang Besar or Sadao, to the west? Keep heading west, bypass Kuala Perlis because that is a skank-pit, services the ferries to Langkawi.

There are a number of seaside towns from KPerlis heading southwest towards AlorStar.

About 8 years ago, I was on bicycle (but there are plenty of local bus connections) and found a very affordable (15RM/night) clean airy fan room in a hotel in one such town (sorry, forgot details), about 400m back from the beach. Unfortunately, beaches now not so clean, jellyfish factories.

Avoid the towns that are in the LP guide - hotels will be twice the price and full of BPackers.

Cheers, AA

Thanks, Aarn.

J Dean - I'll be taking a mini-bus from Nakhon. That's as far as I've gotten in my head! Crossing is up for grabs.

Langkawi. Serenity unbounded. If you want to stay on the mainland though then there are any number of chillout places along the East coast down from Kota Baru.

Kaki Bukit on the local bus route out of Padang. Quiet, no beach.

Kangar for a bigger town. Very friendly women.

Baling area out between Butterworth & Betong. Lots of places to stay.
