It may be true that at one time Thailand was the Land of Smiles, but after living here for 7 years, it seems the smiles are getting fewer and further in between. Whether it sales people, waiters, motor bike taxis, immigration officers, not to mention the police. Or have we just become jaded?

No, the Thais are becoming "Westernized".

OT , but I used to laugh at Hong Kong's " Wonders Never Cease " promo campaign .

"Land of smiles" no longer applies, but "Amazing Thailand" is very apt

somebody once told me they are'nt smiling they are laughing at us.

I think it was a tourism campaign but well over 30 years ago . I can remember it that long ago and there are members here who go back further than me who must remember it when it first appeared..

I think it was actually when the Americans were fighting in Vietnam and their R&R was here in Pattaya. That is where the ### industry actually started hence "Land of smiles".

Get away from Tourist areas especially Pattaya and you will find the LOS and more genuine as well.

No one uses this moniker any longer unless in sarcasm. Even LOS.
