Yeah, always funny how they manage some selective outrage.

They might inquire where the BIB is in relation to drunk driving... or fights (which they also showed on their site).

The BiB get over to Wat Pha Phao awfully quick to break up fights between the Burmese gangs. Happens every year. But I think there is a special team of police waiting nearby in the event it happens.

WAs up in the Thapae area never saw any any misuse of the water pistols and the atmosphere was great with some decent sounds blasting out,not quite early koh pangghan but good none the less

Had to walk all the way back to Santitham again a respectful spash of water and non at all on many occasions

Like many whose physical body who has have been here for perhaps far too many years, I am mainly in "retreat" for Songkraan, "far from the madding crowd:" except, in my little moo baan, where I enjoy offering this aging meat-package for water-anointing by eager children.

The great surprise (blessing) I've had in this year's Songkraan, in my area, is the absence of firecrackers, military ordnance-grade explosions, etc. And, no lame kara-croaky shindigs at high-volume late into the night. No procession of (many drunken) dancing villagers following behind a truck with a sound system capable of serving a stadium-rock concert with fifty-thousand people, blasting out the Lanna equivalent of Issarn mowlam ! What has happened to all the noise ?

But, the highlight for me will be visiting, once again, our figurative "earth-mother" (Mae kong Pandin), the timeless (in cosmic years), Khun Mae Noi: in terms of earth-body years, I suspect she's at least eighty-five.

She still sits "in state," every day, presiding, regally, over her little run-down shop, and, so many days, some of the down-at-the-heels males of the 'hood are gathered around her (never fed-enough babes to the lost spiritual breast ? moths pulled to the light ?) , who, I sense, are either living in, or are on their way into ... or (hopefully) on the way to fledging themselves out of ... their private "nest of misery." Perhaps between jobs, perhaps between wives, perhaps between the rock of age and the hard place of knowing they are in decline.

My senses tell me that being around Mae Noi, for them, is like being in some kind of "healing light."

Her words are few, and simple, but in her eyes, I see: timeless mercy.

I will kneel before her, for "rod nam dam hua," although without all the proper traditional panoply of ritual offerings, and I hope she will bless me, and I once again will hear her recite a Pali blessing (a long one !), before she lustrates my unworthy head-melon with flower-scented water.

During this blessing, her psychotic dog Mai (a male) will probably sneak up on me from behind, sniff me, and then take off on a mad run into the street, where he will frantically run in circles a few times, before coming back to sniff me again, and then repeat his dervish dance, until I leave or he's exhausted. I suspect his nose knows I am an altered steak with an orang inside me, and his synapses just melt-down like a Chernobyl.

If only I could remember all my last year's sins I should ask forgiveness for, and also completely visualize, in detail, next year's probable crop of sins, and the likely ratio of harvest (ones actually committed) to the number of plantings (of fantasies that were not committed), and get advance forgiveness

Should I be expecting more water throwing tomorrow (monday) or the intensity drops substantially?

During Songkran, I usually get up very early in the morning and do errands and stock up on food for the day. It really makes me POed when people start throwing money before about 9 AM. However, at about 7:30 AM today I was going down a deserted street on my bicycle and I could see two very young children up ahead laughing their heads off. They could not believe their luck to have found a big, fat farang coming their way so early in the day. I could have easily avoiding them by riding on the other side of the street, but I did not have the heart to disappoint them. I let them splash me and it made all three of us smile.

Busiest Songran I've experienced in the last 14 years. The moat was gridlocked on all 4 sides for much of the afternoon. The last time I remember this was many years ago.

OK a few farangs were knobs, but I also noticed the vast majority were having a great time and not being too obnoxious. I experienced a very positive afternoon.

Same. All of the Songkran days are roughly the same (12-13-14-15). 13 could be the biggest one, with possible a slight dip as people recover a bit on the 14th, but we go out with a bang again on the 15th. But it varies, also sometimes depending on the weekday that any of the Songkran days happens to fall on.

I had a relatively mild one today as it was family day. Tomorrow early morning we do the temple thing, and then into town to party like there's no tomorrow.

Interesting you should say that...I have lived here for 5 years,and everyone i speak to says it is the quietist songkran they have seen for a long time!!!!

Ok,granted KSK and TP Gate are rammed as per,but to get from chiang phuek to moon muang at 3pm only takes 5 mins on the back roads as opposed to 20 plus the last few years.Even the thais think it is pretty subdued...

last year ksk was really crazy and i got really freaked out in huay tung tao

Thank you to those that posted photos, and especially to Dave2 for his balcony pictures showing the traffic. It reminds me of what I missed and miss about Thailand. Maybe next year I'll delay my trip home and partake in the fun.
