Does My Thai Wife Need A Visa For Myanmar

Featured Replies

Hi all

Visiting Myanmar in July for a few days holiday. I'm aware of my Tourist Visa requirements as a British expat. I was wondering about my Thai wife, does she have to go through the same application at Myanmar Embassy BKK.

cheers

Marty

yes she have to apply for visa, just come back with my Thai wife and son from Burma

.

She does not, as of 15 years ago.

"The ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) foreign ministers signed Tuesday an ASEAN Framework Agreement on Visa Exemption to facilitate intra ASEAN travel.

The agreement was signed by foreign ministers from ASEAN's 10 member states, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The agreement exempts citizens of member countries from visa requirements for a social visit of up to 14 days from the date of entry."

@billoutt, sorry but that is incorrect information, a Thai National still requires a visa to enter Myanmar. You are referring to a framework agreement that was never fully enacted.

For the avoidance of doubt, all nationalities require a visa to enter Myanmar, including Thais.

Thanks guys

I will go with 'The Does Need a Visa' information.

Thanks for your help.

The only possible exception being limited travel from an overland border checkpoint such as Mae Sot to Myawaddy and even the newly opened Singkorn pass. However, it is very unlikely that a Thai that is allowed to travel to Myeik overland from there would be permitted to travel elsewhere in the country especially without a visa. Even with a visa, I think they would need to fly in - unless overland entry from Mae Sot to Myawaddy and then onward overland travel is now finally permitted (Myanmar keeps delaying the border crossing opening dates).

This information is completely outdated garbage. Firstly, 30 days are usually granted to most member states and not only 14 days (except in the case of Cambodia/Thailand for nationals of each other's country) and secondly, this agreement was only really implemented about 10 years ago, not 15 and Myanmar has never implemented it so far. Perhaps it will by 2015, but not so far.

From my own experience, the answer is most certainly yes. There is however a special window at the Myanmar embassy in BKK for the use of Thai citizens, which makes the process for us a whole lot faster to apply.
