Economist hoping for practical solutions to rising baht

BANGKOK, 13 May 2013 (NNT)-Thai Chamber of Commerce University's Economic and Business Forecasting Center Director Thanawat Polvichai said he hopes the solutions to the appreciation of baht will be positive and practical.

Dr. Thanawat said regarding the meeting between Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong and relevant agencies today that the currency surge is an inevitable situation and applying a lower interest policy on a short term basis to stop foreign investors from trying to take advantage of rising baht would be an ideal solution.

He also described today's meeting as an ultimate meet-up of all stake holders, which offers a comprehensive view of the relationship between the Thai baht and the Thai economy. He said each agency must be respectful of other delegates' information, while also expressing his hopes for concrete and synchronized measures to cope with the present situation.

Farmers prepare fields for first day of rice season

NAKHON PHANOM, 13 May 2013 (NNT) – After observing the auspicious occasion of Royal Ploughing Day today, farmers in the rice-growing province of Nakhon Phanom have begun preparing their fields for planting.

The farmers are adhering to the traditional belief that leveling fields and planting seeds on Royal Ploughing Day will ensure a bountiful yield and reduce the risk of disasters, such as drought and flooding.

Farmers in the province expressed their relief over forecasts of storms and the beginning of the rainy season, as there have been concerns that rice production this year would be affected by drought.

Since many areas in Nakhon Phanom have also been affected by flooding in the past years, farmers are opting to start early in planting rice seeds, hoping the crops will be mature and strong enough to survive when the wet season comes this year. The early sowing can also help reduce the cost of labor for farm owners, as workers’ wage skyrockets at the peak of the planting season.

By Digital Media

BANGKOK, May 13 - Finance minister held a special meeting on strengthening the baht Monday as agencies concerned agreed to deal with baht appreciation to achieve the country's export target growth at 8-9 per cent.

The three-hour meeting chaired by Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong, reviewed the country’s economic issues including government spending, private investment, consumer purchasing power, tourism and exports. All sides agreed that that this year’s economy is growing with stability but to achieve the export target, they need to collaborate with one another.

They will work together to handle the baht appreciation to prevent it become too strong, compared to trade partners and to stabilise it in tandem with export mechanisms with an aim to achieve the export growth target of 8-9 per cent this year.

Regarding applying interest rate policy to cope with the strong baht, it is in the responsibility of the Bank of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee to make the decision. (MCOT online news)
