What Would You Do

Recommended Posts

Hello

The situation is this, I am 39, ,married to a Thai since I was 22. We live in Saudi at the momo but have to return to Thailand for 2 years. And I have to have a work permit for 18 months in order to adopt a Thai kiddy. I really have no idea what kind of work I could do, I manage a consultancy here. I also dont really want to work teaching English etc as many seem to do. I'm basically a qualified GM not real speacialism and herindoors in a Ram graduate.

We about half a million quid and a house in Thailand but it would bore me stoopid living there. So, I want to live on Samui for a couple of years with the mrs and nipper whilst the adoption goes through.

What would you do in my situation to satisfy the WP requirement? I dont want to spend too much over the two years, we dont need a flash place. A couple of bedrooms within walking distance to a beach would be nice. Maybe an 2nd hand pick up etc. We are not big spenders.

My fear is I will be bored or on the lash too much if I have nothing to do....

Any advice would be appreciated.

Qualified GM of what ? You could get a work permit by working in a hotel, may be not full time and not for the big money, but at least enough to qualify for a work permit and to keep you "busy" .......

I have an MBA and have worked as GM for a few different industries - no hotels theough. Just want a WP dont really care about the money.

just wrote a long post and it got lost.

short version get a lawyer or an accountant that specialises in these areas. no use getting help on this matter from anyone other than a proffessional.

dont know why u need a work permet for 2 years seems strange.

i would suggest starting a thai company with 2 mill share capital and give your self a work permit.

i shall pm u some suggested place to visit

Thats a shame.

The reason I need a work permit is that its a rule under the adoption scheme....yeh, I know I know!!!!!!

Welcome any PM!

Hopefully Roo will put this thread back in the Samui section so I can discuss this with guys already there.

What kind of jobs are you chaps doing on the Island?

Cheers

IMO the easiest way to satify your needs is open a company with your wife as a partner if things have not changed you will get at least one work permit with the company papers.

Good advice and this is how I started my business, however........

...................you really should take professional advice.

Things change. The two major changes are

1 the law

2 how the individual that you are dealing with interprets that law.

It is not uncommon to get two different answers from two different officers, from the same government department. If you have taken professional advice, then that professional is more likely to be able to get you what you want.

When you set up your company - set it up to do all types of work that a foreign company can do. (There is a list of all of the different legal activities.)

OP mentions his wife is Thai. So of you put it all in her name, company is 100% Thai. So no need to restrict activities of the company. Doesn't let you as a foreigner do every kind work though.

Ps. Don't let any 'expert' tell you that you need to pay some corporate taxes on a small imaginary company profit, even if there is none. Get a real accountant and you can accrue several years of losses, before RD will start to ask questions.

Do you need to remain in Thailand for a fixed period without leaving at all for this adoption to go through?

Get a student visa thingy for a year so the Thailand bit is taken care of and then continue your current client base in the Middle East? Do you need to be on the ground? Can you hire people to do some of the work for you in Saudi so at least money keeps ticking over?

Are there similar industry clients in Thailand you can target? Saudi clients have contacts in Asia you can discuss opportunities with?
