Police emergency number hit by problems
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Those who need to dial 191 in a police emergency may have to exercise a little patience after it was revealed that the emergency number is having problems with its new telephone operator.

Pol Colonel Sanpisit Yaemkesorn, superintendent at the 191 centre, said that for the last five months the emergency exchange had been using a new telephone operator, after it moved to a new police office building. Despite the same number of officers on duty to receive calls, the number of telephone lines had dropped from 12 to six - resulting in a poor quality service.

Sanpisit said the exchange |had also been dealing with other service problems, including |being unable to record emergency calls; the caller's number, or the number of emergency calls received.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Pol Maj-Gen Adul Narongsak has requested more funding to increase the number of telephone lines, but in the meantime, a public relations campaign is seeking to encourage members of the public to opt for JS 100 telephone numbers.

Over 3 million calls were made to 191 in 2010, according to statistics. Of that number, 358,475 were complaints; 663,123 were prank calls and 695,135 went unanswered.

In 2011, 2.8 million calls were made; 427,019 were complaints; 427,019 were prank calls and 244,174 went unanswered.

In 2012, 2.9 million calls |were made; 419,812 calls were complaints; 363,698 were prank calls and 523,525 went unanswered.

6 phone lines to take emergency calls, for area of 10 million people? blink.png

Maybe this is as a result of welfare considerations coming from medical advice that too many emergency lines could lead to many more calls and the BIB would suffer from overwork inducing stress, LOL

And be distracted from their main activities of running billiard halls and other businesses, collecting bribes, protecting illegal gambling, drug activity and other related constabulary duties.

correct me if i'm wrong that makes 5.517 calls a minute

this is alot for 6 lines and will result in people not beeing able to get connection at all

the fact that calls cannot be recorded or the numbers saved is an outrage , would get piece of hardware fixed as soon as possible so they can find and fine the prankcallers

who make up big piece of the pie

Nope, that is the national number for the entire country of 70 million people. Guess that explains why they do not answer when you call.....

" Hey Colonel Sombat, with our funding money, should we put in more phone lines to answer emergency police calls, or do you want to use it to buy a Mercedes Benz for your mia noi ? No problem, buy her a white one...."

Call 191 in an emergence! Please patiently while you are being robbed, mugged, assaulted, raped or Murdered. The BIB want to apologize for not being able to do in Thailand what a 10 year old can do on their own iphone at home..

Proper Prior Planning prevents Piss Poor Performance = PTP/BIB. Either of them, Both Of Them, could not find a cavity in a candy factory.

A bit of a misunderstanding here. 191 is the national emergency number but each region has its own 191 call center. Calling 191 in Chiang Mai would not connect to the Bangkok 191 call center.

It's not just the emergency #. My made a 181 call to report a death two weeks back. Unanswered many times and call local police stations unanswered many times. Only took almost two hours to get an answer from any of the surrounding police stations. TIT

So every single city in Thailand has its own police call center? Kinda find that hard to believe. I would have thought there would be a national call center, who would then route the call to the appropriate police station.

So if 6 lines are allocated for Bangkok, that certainly does not bode well for the number of lines in smaller cities..... :-)

Chiang Mai Provincial Police Division opened the 191 emergency call center on August 5, 2010 at the Police Division Headquarters on the Chiang Mai Lampang road in Tha Sala. Acting National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Pratheep Tanprasert presided over the opening ceremony where he was welcomed by the Chiang Mai police.

<snip>

The 191 emergency call center began implementation in 2008, and has been installed in 20 provinces, with Chiang Mai being the latest. Under this year’s budget 5 more provincial centers will be set up and it is expected that all provinces will eventually be covered."
