arthurwait
Yes we're seeing the same frustrated-spoiled-child reaction in the comments too. News flash guys - we farang aren't the pinnacle of desirability among all the ladies of Thailand. Those that are of the type Thais and other Asians consider gorgeous will usually not even consider being overtly friendly with us in public because the Thais watching might think they are as low as the skanky upcountry peasant girls usually associated with us. And that's not even taking the sex-worker stigma into account - the beer girls already are a bit touched by that historically so many will be doubly-vigilant to ONLY be professional with farang, in fact possibly even ice-queen style forced smiles. There are exceptions of course, in a context where they can be sure a given well-dressed polite (in their lights) farang is a true international executive businessman type or other assured high-status "catch", but run-of-the-mill situations the desirable girls know that 99% of the time they can do much better than the average westerner without all the social stigma. Bottom line - at the high end - tall white-skinned Thai-standard beauty-queen - even the most young and attractive of us have a hard time competing with the wealthy Thais, and in many cases Japanese Korean Chinese. Never mind the usual fat old leering guy dressed for a tip-picking session. You maybe surprised how many farangs are married to wealthy Thai girls, yes in the same age bracket as them who aren't international businessmen. Would those farangs be interested in beer girls, promo girls ? Well not for marriage....
mikemac
"Well the girls were extremely pretty but so hollow in the brain."...!!!! Luckily the two girls did not know what he thought about their intellect or he would have been the one thrown in the bin.
Songhua
no problem gave her 20 baht said thanks for chatting. Pushing out the boat, big time! Just like me, was sat in the karaoke bar one night,,where they know me quite well 3 young girly sitting next to me,,,,Huw cow Huw cow, think they wanted me to order food in the bar, which is not cheap. So I give one of them 50 baht, sent her down the shop to buy 3 mamma noodles Oh, come on. Only another fifty or so and they could've splurged on a hotdog and Iced Milo at 7/11. spidermike007
93% of communication is non-verbal. You seem to have been under the mistaken impression that it was part of their job to bus the tables, while of course they would perceive that as a tremendous insult, their job is to look pretty and encourage beer sales full stop. Your buying them a packet of crisps under those conditions may have been perceived also as an insult, since if they're going to be tipped it should be in cash. Your gesture could be interpreted as if they could not afford to buy their own, many of these girls do very well indeed, making more than most English teachers. Plus this is very fattening food, which they can't afford to gain. 93% of communication is non-verbal. I think we must do that here, as often as possible, as things are usually not as they seem. I was thinking the same thing. Why would the fine beer girls be cleaning up after patrons. Not at all what they are there for. I think to expect these gals to be very friendly to the foreigner is asking a bit much, unless you happen to have Brad Pitt looks, which is probably not the case. Anyway, great job interpreting the situation. We can all learn from this "unspoken" language.

And just trying to counteract the often-found view that just because you're a farang normal Thai girls should swoon at your feet as if Asia were still as undeveloped as thirty years ago. And regarding these types of "professional beauty" girls, you may be a billionaire but if you're walking around in shorts and a singlet leering at them they won't give you the time of day no matter how many packets of crisps you throw at them. NoshowJones
I would agree with Moe666. The beer girls (any beer brand) are not waitresses. In fact I'm not sure just what purpose they are for. I haven't seen them offer any special "deals" when they are around. All of them are reasonably nice looking girls but I've never seen one that was a stunner. And, I think us women are more discerning than men when it comes to looks. With the very odd exception, I have not seen any grossly overweight tattooed Farang women in Thailand, and certainly none with facial hair. DGS1244
I've always thought these young ladies are an interesting phenomenon. My Thai friends tell me they are known as sao BG beer chang (etcetera depending on the beer), and you may remember a Carabao song about them. They are all young and many are students working part time. As far as I know BG stands for bar girl, but these are completely different from the type of bar girls usually discussed by westerners. While educated Thai friends tend to look down on the latter, many seem to see sao BG as prime targets for chatting up. They are happy gossiping about a conquest, which they certainly would not do if they had a liaison with an ordinary bar girl.. Actually they are called 'pretties' some are sent to a bar for an evening just to push their sponsors beer, i.e. special nights others are permanently 'attached' to a bar but all are paid by the beer companies. Those permanently in a bar tend to help out the same as a normal server, those for one nighter's normally do not do anything other than pour beer. Almost all are students and chosen for their figures. The great thing about them the majority can actually speak English??

You have to speak Thai for the full service. Note to Rene If you were sitting at a table with some men they wouldn't approach as it becomes the sitting ladies job to pour the beer for all the men at the table. I've got a feeling that Rene wouldn't be very good at her "job"!
