BANGKOK: -- The Reproduction Health Development Committee is considering allowing people to use morning-after pills in a bid to prevent unprepared pregnancy.

The Royal College of Physicians will study the drug usage instruction and controlling measures before proposing the plan, which includes this measure, in 60 days for implementation later on.

Adults should realise it is difficult to prevent youths from having sex, said Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong, who chaired the committee's meeting yesterday.

He said the panel planned to use social media to educate youngsters about safe sex and where to get or buy birth control products.

There would also be "teens' health clinics" outside hospital premises with more public sector participation to provide services and information.

Disease Control Department chief Porntheo Siriwanarangsan reported that Thais needed 230 million condoms per year - but the Public Health Ministry and the National Health Security Office could afford only 40 million.

Pornthep cited recent survey findings that 68 per cent of youths aged 15-24 used condoms during sex last year, while an estimated 75 per cent of labourers used condoms in 2011.

Once again The issue is education. There needs to be structured, open and frank sex education classes and discussions incorporated into the national curriculum age 11 years upwards..... not just the 'embarrassing and funny' one hour a week that I understand goes on at the moment, where the teaching medium is woefully inadequate. Social media has its place to reinforce formal education, as does TV. Until the Education Ministry get their head out of their <deleted> the issues of unwanted pregnancy, STD's (and child sexual abuse) will remain a taboo subject amongst the vast uneducated majority.

The morning after pill can only be a good thing if all of the above is in place. Otherwise the kids will just use it as a convenience NOT to use condoms...... Especially the Thai young men who wouldn't know the difference between a condom and a balloon, and the submissive young girl who will do as she is told..... It being 'normal' not to use a condom.

Exactly. Perhaps they want to make it MORE available, like at 7 eleven. Lol. Men need to be more careful. If they absolutely refuse to use a condom they should learn about 'coitus interutus'. Stop getting young girls pregnant and abandoning them.

It's sadly funny that in a society where sex exists big time it must not be spoken about.

Like many others I have worked in schools where sex education is unlikely to ever be on the syllabus voluntarily and it's no good leaving it to parents who rarely talk to their family about anything of importance anyway so sex is a total No No and should be dealt with in school. Back to Square One.

I once lived in India for about four years. The Government launched a campaign to reduce youth pregnancy and HIV.

They went village to village to try and show that condoms could help reduce these things. In the live lectures and the videos, they showed the application of how to put a condom on. They used their finger to demonstrate. They distributed thousands of condoms for free.

Then, they could not figure out why the rates did not drop.

This is absolutely true.

It was because the men put the condoms on their fingers.

Sex education - has to be real and specific. It is good that someone wants to try in this country, but it will be a slow process.

and "Postinor" too. In fact it is much easier to get a morning after pill in Thailand than in many so-called civilised countries. Wasn't there an article a while ago saying that the morning after pill was too widely used - ie instead of regular contraceptive pills?

Strange translation, but the mention of "60 days" could be directly linked to "abortion pills". "Morning after pills" have, as several here point out, been and still are available. The question of legalization of abortion pills have been discussed earlier this year. I think people responsible for the proposed legalization might be avoiding the term "abortion terms" to avoid stirring up a debate (among people that should be lving their own life than dictating others'). Legalize it "under the table" so to speak.
