I sometimes wonder about the stories published in world news.

For example, today there are stories that hardly qualify as "breaking news" such as a small plane crash in guatemala and the sentence of a woman who cut off her husband's penis, but no word on the unrests in Egypt, which is geopolitically relevant.

How are these stories selected?
