A day does not go by on TV without someone starting a topic to complain about the complainers. Why don't you start a new message board called "We Love Thailand" and ban anyone who is bitter or angry or disappointed or criticizes anything Thai related?

So true. I think the OP (soi41) should get a life and stop complaining.

If the old lady would stick her finger up my a$$ while giving me a h&^mm%$...it would just about sum things up here.

In my opinion I came here for the sheer difference , the exhilaration , the Buddhist values even though I'm agnostic. but there was a simple beauty, people were happy without the western consumerism.. I liked it ... sure I'm happy that I can get a pint of milk and don't have to use those horrible bowls to wash my arse with any more, and instead can use those amazing bum hoses.that cleanse a good meter of colon.without touching the brown stained rim like the old day or smearing and paper cuting my sensitive arse. like back home.

Everywhere anywhere has+'s -'s but on balance what do you what ?.

personally. pluses are:

  • Sunshine,
  • .*Woman that smile and are happy to be complimented on ,
  • *.I like the fact that corruption is more evenly spread not elusive to the upper echelon of society ( although that seems to be changing) I like being able to bribe a police officer with 100b for not having the proper paperwork on a motorbike.
  • I hate to sound shallow but it refreshes me to see so many attractive happy girls smiling everywhere. with smooth hairless skin in short skirts
  • I don't get hay-fever and I don't suffer rheumatism as much with the warm weather.
  • I like that people will welcome you in and offer help and assistance to strangers, I have many great tales of this from my traveling days . (you wont see this any more in western oriented areas like Phuket these areas are determined to become outposts of back home . no one in these places wants to live in Thailand they want to change Thailand to be like back home and will trash the landscape so they can live in high walled gated communities.... there are few and fewer areas one can stay that gives that same magical feeling of experiencing a different culture.anymore.)

On the negative side, and most are all connected to the same thing.

  • Thailand is become more westernized and so less of a feeling of adventure.
  • bureaucracy is a headache, if you want to stay legal.
  • Money driven consumerism , Is there anywhere left in the world you can live without feeling inadequate for not owning an Iphone?
  • The biggest negative though is about the westerners that now come here to live, so many westerners here now with the view that because they have more money they have more entitlement to be here. Just them and and cheep labour for maids and sex.. There is nowhere more apparent than on this forum. it doesn't matter what you post, there will be someone saying 'another idiot that cant afford to be here you should go and leave the place for us'. If they are not digging at how successful and deserved they are; they will be making assumptions that everyone else is a sex tourist. There are few normal people on this forum.. with values of equality and, well, Buddhist principles

But Is it the capitalist, consumerist, sliver spooned, self righteous idiot farangs fault? or Thailand promoting this kind of new breed of westerner, for self driven greed, to prostitute their own ideals for more money... I don't know.. .. But things are changing.

For all its flaws I have always thought the positives out way the negatives. but the gap is closing.. and unfortunately I don't think it the Thais fault. the general mass would still be ok if not poised but the spoils and decadence of the new westerner,.or the western educated government hierarchy..that are the ruleing class..

I wish the wealthy stayed in Monte Carlo or Caribbeans and left this paradise for the people who appreciated it as it was. simple and beautiful...

This probable wont make sense when i read it back in the morning I should learn never to write on this forum after a few bottle of Chang and a Valium so sorry in advance for the rambling rant..

Great post. For me one of the most negative things about this country is the Thai apologists who think Thailand is some wonderful utopia and that it was free of problems till the evil west forced their horrible values on the poor subservient Thais who had no choice but to comply.

On the positive side you are so right about the buddhist values. I see them every day from the way people drive to the honest way people do business. Wouldn't get those values in the west.

From the post #63 above: I like that people will welcome you in and offer help and assistance to strangers,

But what really gets the Thai folk is when you as stranger are offering help and assistance to them.
