Ayutthaya industrial estate assured of flood-free status

BANGKOK, July 24 – Construction of a 5km long anti-flood dyke, to protect one of Thailand’s major industrial estates in the old capital of Ayutthaya, costing Bt40 million, will be completed this month, according to a senior official of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

IEAT deputy governor Jakkarat Lertopas said the original dyke at Saha Rattana Nakhon industrial estate in Ayutthaya has been raised 50cm higher to ensure safety from floods this year.

The industrial estate was severely damaged by the massive 2011 floods which swept through Thailand’s lower-northern and central plains regions.

This is a temporary dyke, he said, noting that a permanent 7km-long flood protection embankment will be finished around July-August next year.

He said two-thirds of the budget for the permanent embankment, more than Bt200 million, will be contributed by the government.

The permanent anti-flood wall will be 50cm higher than the highest level of the 2011 floodwaters.

Mr Jakkarat said the IEAT gave assurances that the Saha Rattana Nakorn industrial estate, covering 30,000 rai or 12,000 acres, will not be hit by flooding again thanks to a more sophisticated anti-flood system.

The government’s planned Bt350 billion investment in water management will also be helpful to a number of other industrial estates, he said.

In addition to high anti-flood walls, most industrial estates including Ban Wah (hi-tech) and Bang Pa-in are equipped with pumps to release flood water out of the embankments.

Mr Jakkarat said the IEAT has also purchased anti-flood equipment to support industrial estates in case of emergency. (MCOT online news)

Save the industrial estates. The employees will not be able to come to work because their homes will be flooded. There is allot of work being done on the south side of Klong Rangsit, pilings are being put in and cement dikes are being built, and home are being destroyed. Still there are many holes in the dike some you could drive QE2 through..

Agreed. I am at Hi-Tec Park and they have taken a similar approach.... dykes 50cm above previous flood levels.

This year they wont have a problem with floods as the CP river is still at its lowest level with water being released from dams every couple of weeks to fill the klongs for the farmers.

We are told there is still a drought in some parts of the upper catchment and most dams are still well down.

The floods they are now having in the east will not get to Ayutthaya so no problem with that.

But next year and the next when the rain patterns move north could well be a different story.

We will have to wait and see if the flood walls that are being build to protect cities help or hinder the release of water

The majority of the work was paid for by the factories, not the government.

No matter how high these walls are built, if the water level is higher than the land the water will come from under the buildings, roads etc = when the water goes down you have said industry parks sat in there own swimming pools

Maybe should invest is sky hooks so said industry's can be hoisted upwards ?

Assurances that the next flood will not affect industrial parks...Think of it as a cultural trait of Thais.

The 2011 flood was in the making for weeks and weeks before it hit Bangkok. Before then, all the usual politicos of the time could think of (from the PM and Mps on down) was to lay in the coffins and summon the spirits of their ancestor for guidance and help.

AFTER the flood hit Bangkok and outlaying areas were under over a meter of putrid water, did the Governor and the newly elected PM began putting on band-aids to "save" inner Bangkok.

Thais are by nature, culture and tradition reactive. At that, they need gross incidents that cannot be ignored by anyone: a wealthy monk philandering, fatal accidents on the roads, derailment of trains, pervasive corruption, deaths of tourists in hotels due to poor safety standards, hacking of people at the hands of irate taxi and/or tuk-tuk drivers... The list is long.

So, it should come to no surprise that the announced measures to make sure the next flood does not affect the tax base of some regions will actually be effective. Wishful thinking rather than solid planing.

Has the government summoned the advise and/or help of the Netherlands? Even during the floods of 2011 such suggestion was deemed to be un-Thai. Never mind that the Japanese ambassador to Thailand pointed out the need of help from those who really know how to handle floods and land reclamation from the sea. It all fell into deaf ears.

Thais cannot see nuances of a specific problem. Tunnel vision is the result of their Thainess. It is a mighty powerful comfort zone. So self absorbed they are in their Thainess, they cannot see that it leads them to thoughtlessness in many of their actions and behaviour. Not that they are evil. They have been drilled and taught from childhood to let karma, the government or their amulets take care of the problems.

Sorry .... I cannot wait until it floods ..... then the big woooooooooooops comes out

Better buy a boat before the prices go up

Save the industrial estates. The employees will not be able to come to work because their homes will be flooded. The quality of this work is abysmal in my opinion. Great idea, very poorly executed with extremely inferior pilings which are breaking up as soon as they are lifted in many cases.

I've also been watching the gaps which I doubt will get closed up any time soon.

When the next high water (flood) comes people can stand on those raised dykes and look at miles of flooded land in all directions. The owners of the protected sites may feel real good but those people who work there and live where the flood waters are diverted to may not feel so whoopee.

These Thais are assuring, guaranteeing, measuring, taking precautions, stating, puffing and blustering. The Thais are puffing and blustering so much it's like a powerful flatulence in church. So everyone should run to build or set up business in Ayutthaya, the Thais assure it. Boy oh boy these Thais. They are something else.

Some people seem to think their remarks are clever, while others might see their remark as, smart arsed.

To suggest complaint to a government that set up industrial estates, airports, etc, in flood plains, dyked around them to (divert) flood waters toward the housing that is in place, to support said facilities, may be, what some would call a half arse suggestion...

Mother Nature is coming Thailand and unless you have your dykes in order, she will teach you another valuable lesson in humility.

Here's a smart arsed reply, The river Ping has overflowed up N/W it flows down to Nakhon Sawan joins other rivers to form the Chao P river through BKK.

Other rivers that join at Nak/Sawan NAN - YOM + If there is not the protection within the month (impossible) This Government will have to take a quick holiday, another repeat performance --curtains. My opinion.

No repeat performance looking likely. The north has been very dry, flash floods here and there, but nothing on 2011 which was wet from February.

Though no thanks to the government's actions I should add.
