Where Expats Hang Out (Other than pubs & clubs)

Sorry if this has been asked before, my search has failed to show any good results.

I just arrived in Bangkok on Friday for a three year contract.

I would like to meet other expats, but I'm not much into the pub / club scene. I may go to a pub once every couple of weeks, but overall it's just not my scene.

Where do expats hang out other than at pubs and clubs?

Are there any groups/clubs/forums I can join of Thailand expats who like to do fun things that don't include drinking and partying?

Could you name a few places?

Thanks

You might try the British Club :

http://www.britishclubbangkok.org/

You no longer have to be British to join.

Patrick

This seems to have some reciprocal agreement or arrangement with the Penn Club.

What do they have there besides alumni meetings?

Good place to go while in Bangkok!

Sorry,

and when I go there, what is the difference between Just Smart, Smart Casual, and Smart?

We are pleased to invite you to our InterNations Bangkok July Get-Together @The Clubhouse Sports Bar & Grill! Come spend a mid-summer evening at The Clubhouse Sports Bar & Grill, where you can let your hair down, drink a cold beer, and enjoy the company of expats from all over the world. Albatross Members enjoy free entry, and all attendees can enjoy an extended happy hour until 9:30pm, free appetizers, and a regulation pool table for our use:)

Thank you, JLCrab, but when I went to both links you suggest, I found I needed to login before going any further.

When I went to login, I see I need a personal invitation.

Why don't you please PM me one then.

TKS!

Pls just make it out to OCHam

Tks, Again.

I would approach it differently. Try searching for activities like a sport, a health club, a book club or other activity you might enjoy and meet likeminded people there. One of the Chamber of Commerce groups could be interesting. If you find something you like to do, you will most likely meet people doing it.

I have nothing to do with it except I am a member who has yet to attend a function as I am 300 miles away from Bangkok. The big honcho for the group is Ms. Pamela Hongsakul -- this is her website with phone numbers

As it is short notice til WED maybe you can call her and see if it is OK just to show up.

Thank you for the suggestions so far.

I did Internations.org a few weeks ago, and I will be attending that event on Wednesday.

Back home, I met friends through college mostly, and I also made friends by fixing people's computers by word of mouth. Because I have no interest in sports, finding friends in my local area was challenging, so most of my really close friends lived in other states.

I am hoping to change that here!

why do you want to meet expats. This isThailand and the Thais are lovely people and make very loyal friends. A lot of us expats like to hang out with Thais, eat Thai food and make Thai friends. That the pleasure of living in a foreign countrey.

I do want to meet Thais, of course, but I want to start with meeting other expats because:

1. I speak 5 words in Thai, so making friends with Thais is going to take some time as I need to learn more of the language. I will make Thai friends soon enough, but that takes time as well.

2. I am interested in other people who have the same passions as i do, and one of those passions is traveling and living abroad.

3. Just because you are an expat doesn't mean you shouldn't want to meet other expats, that's silly.

4. Because I want to meet people with the experience of being new to the country, who can teach me what an expat should know, and who I can share the experience of being new to Thailand with.

1) ever consider you would be able to speak more than 5 wordsof thai if you forgot about hanging out with expats and made some thai friends?

2) might be a shock to you but thai people also share the passion of travel

3) i consider insulated expats to be the worst expats. they are also the same people that complain with muslims move to western countries and do not make any attempt to integrate.

4) sounds like the pussy way to expat.

You could try attending a hash house harrier run. Just tell them you don't drink if you really don't. Good social meet up in any case and very good way to see places that ordinary tourists or expats or even Thai's for that matter don't normally get to see.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I arrived in Bangkok some 7 years ago a friend invited me to a charity event of the Rotary Club of Bangkok. Well, to make a long story short I am now a member of the RCB and enjoy the company of very interesting expats and Thais as well. Besides that it's a great opportunity to some good for the underprivileged here in Thailand and god knows there are many. PM me if interested.
