Wow the father reported it not because she's 14 but because the relationship affected her studies! <deleted>!

Not sure why that's so shocking to you.. 14 year olds do actually have relationships normally. Typically with their peers, but someone in his/her twenties is also not out of the ordinary. With the parent's consent that rarely leads to a legal case. In this case however the father decided that the relationship was not in his daughter's best interest and stepped in. That's a normal, responsible thing to do.

I don't really understand the shock and surprise I see going around here. Perhaps the only reason we're even reading about it is because he was a police volunteer, which is guaranteed to get good traction with the readership.

Help me out here. "charged with sexual offenses with a minor under the age of 15". Do I understand correctly that 15 is the age of consent?! I guess those 15-year-olds are little long in the tooth for this sicko :-/

Don't know where you come from, but in most European countries it is 16 if consent, and agreed by parents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed; the thing we're arguing about here is 'time'; under 12 months of the stuff.

If you don't understand what is wrong you need to see a shrink

The age of consent in Thailand is 15, however if money or gifts are exchange, ie: prostitution she or he must be 18.

No, it's not. The age of consent in Thailand is 15 WITH PARENTAL CONSENT. If not it is 18.

However, if a girl works in a bar (due to exposure to alcohol), then the age rises to 20.

From Wiki -

The age of consent in Thailand is 15 (with the below caveat) as specified by article 279 of the Thai Criminal Code. The current legislation applies to all regardless of gender and/or sexual orientation.

However, parts of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, which disallow any sexual contact with prostitutes under the age of 18, are widely interpreted by some local authorities to cover sexual acts classed as "obscenity for personal gratification". Also from the Penal Code Amendment Act of 1997 Section 283bis, having sex with a child under 18 is a compoundable offense even with the consent of that person. The parent or the child may file charges against the other side if he or she later regrets his or her own action. This ostensibly makes the Thai unfettered age of consent 18.

They don't mention the working in a bar aspect.

Don't ask me why. TiT

In some states in the US, sex with a 15 yr old is still illegal and carries a harsh penalty, but In Louisiana, if a child is 13 or

Younger, you will never get out of jail. If you are put in the General population, you would be lucky to live a week!

As they say 15 will get you 20 and a 44 will get you life.

Yes, 15 is the divine age.

I think a 28 old boy with a 14 year old gf is more natural than

a 50 year old man with a 20 year old 'gf'

Fixed it

As far as I know 16 is the age of consent but I am sure it has to be with the parents consent. 18 is fully legal.

Tuff luck, but unlike yourself, i have my standard.

I'm over 40 so any girl below 30 goes right out the window, -again unlike yourself.

I dont blame you for not having my standard, few does,

but you could at least try being less repulsive, what you are doing here is defending

sleeping with a girl at the age of your daughters daughter.

15 is the age a Thai can be married with parents consent, not the age of consent to have sex..common myth.

EVEN IF IT WAS O.K., IS IT REALLY O.K.?

The human mind isn't fully developed till about 22 years....think about it!

There is hardly a teenager that wouldn't want to screw at least someone age 25-30, free.

While at the same time there isn't anyone below 50 that would want to touch a 60 year old person,

unless compensated financially, and even then its an unpleasant affair....think about it.

Yes, 15 is the age of consent in Thailand for unmarried people.

The judge will probably give him the usual choice in such cases, marriage or jail.

A Muslim senator in my country, said according to his religion, if a girls starts menstruating, develops breasts or has pubic hair, that she is a woman. He married a 13 year old Egyptian girl. It's my prayers that his vacations are restricted to Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Nigeria has pedophile leaning upper house.

I know a few men around 60 buying sex from 20-25 year old girls,

-a far more morally reprehensible act. Do You ? and did you do anything about it ?

I don't think you see too many 60 year old prostitutes around..... even in Thailand.

Keep in mind this is a Pattaya One report. I doubt the father took the time to explain himself, certainly not in English, to one of Pattaya One's top "journalists."

I'm pretty sure stories like this are padded with "information" that fits in with the reporters' assumptions and then translated into English using the first words that come to mind.

Keep in mind that laws are written in the Thai language. English translations may not be entirely accurate.Updated 03-17-01:
Referrence: Section 277 of The Thai Penal Code: "WHOEVER has sexual intercourse with a girl not yet over fifteen years of age and not being his own wife, whether such girl shall consent or not, shall be punished with imprisonment of four to twenty years and fined between Bt8,000 to Bt40,000. "If the commission of the offence according to the first paragraph is committed against a girl not yet over thirteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of seven to twenty years and fine of Bt14,000 to Bt40,000 or imprisonment for life. "If the commission of the offence according to the first of second paragraph is committed by participation of persons in the nature of raping and/or murdering a girl, or by using weapons or explosives, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment for life."
Date: 5/20/97 Section: Local Legislative amendment set to outlaw male rape MEN who rape other men or boys may soon face penalties equal to those faced by men convicted of raping females. The Council of Social Service Ministers has agreed in principle to have the the Criminal Code amended so, in effect, males will also be considered the victims of rape under the law, Government Spokesman Warathep Rattanakorn said yesterday. Currently under Article 276 of the code, only those convicted of raping women face the maximum penalty of a 20-year prison term and/or a Bt40,000 fine. According to Article 278, any offender, regardless of gender, who forces a male aged over 15 years into a sexual act, is convicted only of sexual molestation, which carries the maximum penalty of a 10-year prison term and/or a Bt20,000 fine. Under the amendment, those who forcibly sodomise males over age 15 would face the penalty equal to those convicted of rape a 20-year prison term and/or a Bt40,000 fine. Cases where the victims are under 15, regardless of whether they give consent, would also carry the same penalty. Those who sodomise boys under 13, regardless of whether they give consent, would face a 20-year prison term and/or a Bt40,000 fine, or life imprisonment. Those people who perform other sexual acts on men against their will would be subjected to the same penalty as in Article 278. They would face a 15-year prison term and/or a Bt30,000 fine if the crime is committed on men younger than 15, regardless of whether they give consent. The council also agreed that penalties for those convicted of the possession or production of pornographic material should be increased in an attempt to eradicate child pornography, the spokesman said. The amendment would also include an amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure the protection of children's rights during police questioning, court testimonies and procedures, he said.
