Heavy police presence today?

Featured Replies

So what's with all the police swarming around the 3kings monument area today? Went to post office/run errands and there were road blocks masses of police/military but all seemed calm enough. Someone important coming to visit?

Someone important? You gotta be kidding.

Saw them head north toward Mae rim. I have never seem that many cops in cm before.

Would a large group of BiB be a "mischief" of cops?

They were out trying to kidnap some Italian tourists but could only find Chinese!

They were renovating the museum behind the 3 Kings monument a few weeks ago in preparation for a visit from Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It could have been her.

No,but it wouldn't be a parliament of owls that's for sure.

Ok TV, time to unite!!! We will have our own code when walking around the moat. If I am wearing:

1. wife beater, that means BiB are busting bikers without helmets

2. gloves and long pants in 35 C weather.....means crackdown on overstays

3. white powder on my face......bad mosquitoes and big discounts at 7-11

4. no shirt and walking around super drunk.......means I am super drunk

5. shaved head like I am a buddist......means free food from noon to 4

The police commanding general for Northern Thailand (District 5) came for an annual ceremony at the 3 Kings monument and to briefly address representatives of all law enforcement activities (RTAF, Border Police, etc.) that will be involved in Asean affairs in 2 years. The governor and local dignitaries attended.

The general mentioned Pattay, Koh Samui, Phuket, and Chiangmai as primary tourist spots (outside of Bangkok) and that, while Chiangmai is not like the first 3, improvements must be made in Chiangmai to improve tourist safety and confidence.

Cops have been swarming in Udon Thani for the last week - a series of seminars. Naturally, the bars have been empty and , taxis - Tuk Tuks, etc. are hard to find, because the police were not on their day job.

I was told by a Thai source they are Bangkok police who are checking into corruption by local CM police. This does not seem to be a big deal as they do this from time to time to keep things (corruption) from getting out of control. Just what i was told, personally I have no idea.

Forgot, I was told this will last a few days, and is pretty much routine.

In Pai it would be called a 'murder' of cops.

I know thhat all the counterfiet merch was not for sale at the bazaar at this time..for 5 days the vendor told me.

I was at the Night Bazaar a couple of weeks ago one evening when they were raided. It was rather amusing to see the system in place of vendors being notified by way of their mobile telephones that the cops were on the way. You could see at least a dozen vendors running towards the back heading into the Pornping Hotel parking area carrying armloads of fake Armani, LV, bags, etc. or large plastic sacks of stuff being thrown into waiting tuk tuks and the drivers taking off down Chang Klan. The special police force did come heavy handed and looked very serious but I think they were probably too late. One vendor even knocked down a tourist as he was running so fast with an armload of goods. It was really quite amusing to see this cat and mouse situation.

But this has nothing to do with the police mentioned in the OP.

I hope they clean their act up especially when it comes to tourist bringing in money to the country...I was just riding a motorbike I rented 20 mins earlier to the chiang mai zoo. As soon as we turned onto highway 121 I saw a swarm of cops make eye contact with me aalmost salivating while they waited for me to get to them through all the traffic.

What am I doing illegal..am I being racially profiled? I was next to other motorcycles not even wearing their helmets. I had no idea what he was saying but it was obvious he just wanted money. I gave him 200 baht and didn't receive any paperwork..just an evil grin.

My gf told me he was asking for a license. The rental agency never mentioned anything about a license.. Is it not legal for me to rent a motorbike from the rental agencies?

Corrupt cops like this make me change my mind about spending my vacations here.

She was right, you need a m/c license to drive a m/c in Thailand. Same as every other country in the world.

Rental agency only has a problem if you kill or injure someone.

Fine for not having license is 200bht.

Never been "picked on" by BiB in Chiang Mai coz I'm a "whitey". Hear different from further south, but never experienced it myself.

Big words corrupt cops.

I would say stupid foreigner that drives without driving licence. Try to do that "back home" and see how far you come with 200 baht.

Thailandnicked seems to think that tourists shouldn't be accountable to the law and it seems that his logic is based on the fact that they bring money into the country! Bless him.

The recless farang motorbike renters will be the number one reason they will force us to buy their insurance on arrival.

Not at all, I would like to follow the law. I think the problem here is that as a tourist visiting the country this was never explained to us. Motorbike rental agencies make no mention of this and I've read lots of tourist guides and read nothing about a license being needed. I have no idea how a tourist would even go about obtaining one.

Thailasndnick2- My understanding that if you have a motorbike license issued in your home country it is good here-if you are really a tourist.

If not then you need to go to Immigration I think to get a certificate of residence before you can apply for a thai license. Then take a test at the driving centre just before Big C on Hang Dong Road-but your gf will probably know all this? Also need a doctor letter t confirm you are still breathing

If I am wrong someone here will correct me....

So Thailandnick2 the tourist got nicked-hmmmm
