BKK starts putting sand bags at risk spots as floods loom

BANGKOK, 01 Oct 2013 (NNT) - Officials of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) started laying sand bags in Bang Plat District located near the Chao Phraya River, in preparation for possible floods.

Director of the Bang Plat District Lukkana Phakdeenarunart and her entourage visited a unit at the district's City Planning office, to inspect the sand bag packaging process.

The sand bags will soon be deployed in the district's 9 flood-prone spots near the river such as Thonburi or Sang Hee Bridge, and Charansanitwong Road Soi 69. All of the 9 zones were hit hard by the 2011 floods.

The sand bags deployment operation will also be assisted by the military. The district has also prepared equipment necessary for handling floods and aiding residents in case of emergency.

Didn't someone promise the Japanese industrialists that this would not happen again??

Just askin' (as they say)

Yes. In 2011 a couple of Japanese businessmen interviewed on television, the BBC I think, said if it happened again they would have to relocate, as did a Singaporean.

The Japanese also said they didn't think the Thai government would do much about proper flood prevention in the future.

I thought it was interesting that many Thais didnt dismantle the little 'temporary' brick walls they built against the 2011 floods. They dont believe their government anymore than we do.

Theyre thinking ahead .clap2.gif

They'll have to learn to work together as a community...the little oligarchy of PTP serves to only make them more destitute and use & abuse them.

I noticed the brick/cement wall thing too & thought likewise..they've seen it all a few too many times.

As long as Farang have no voice (or any real rights for that matter), then Thailand only has its own people to listen too, which is not exactly healthy. It has only bred layers of lies through the years and nobody is smart or brave enough to go head to head with Govt for the peoples sake.

Governor confident Bangkok will avert flooding
By English News

AYUTTHAYA, Oct 1 – Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra today reaffirmed that the overall flood situation in the Thai capital is not worrisome though more effort to speed up draining is needed in time of heavy downpours.

Speaking after inspecting water situation in central Ayutthaya province, Mr Sukhumbhand expressed confidence that Bangkok will not be flooded as large volumes of water have been discharged from the Pasak Cholasit Dam to the Pasak River via the Rama VI Dam, before flowing to the Chao Phraya River, bypassing Bangkok going to the Gulf of Thailand.

Meanwhile, water stored in the Rama VI Dam is also being released to the Raphipat canal through the Phra Narai sluice gate before reaching the eastern side of Bangkok.

Mr Sukhumbhand said that the overall flood situation is not worrisome since the volume of water being discharged from the dam was not as great as in 2011.

The Royal Irrigation Department and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have been working closely to prevent flooding, he said, explaining that the capital has the capacity to handle water running through the Chao Phraya River at 2,900 cubic metres per second. As of now, water in the Chao Phraya River is flowing at 2,300 cubic metres per second.

The governor, however, expressed concern over the city’s drainage system as the authorities still need to expedite draining water in time of heavy downpour. (MCOT online news)
