Tsunami warning network nears completion

Construction of tsunami warning towers in the southern Andaman Sea region, ravaged by the late 2004 tsunami, is mostly complete.

The Prime Minister's Office reported to the cabinet that construction of 51 of a planned 55 tsunami warning-tower network has been completed.

Suranand Vejjajiva, minister at the PM's office, was assigned to take care of establishing the country's disaster early warning system and tsunami warning towers. He has supervised the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning's construction of the towers.

He said all the towers are completed in the country's six southern Andaman provinces hit by the 2004 giant waves - Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun. - (TNA)
