Firecrackers

Every year approx 4 weeks before end of Buddhist Lent (this year 19 october) they start playing with firecrackers here in our village south in Ubon. For 4 weeks now i hear firecrackers from early morning to late nigth.Hundreds of them every day. Some og them are very powerfull. The children have school holliday so they have time to play with this all day. Last night was the last day of buddhist lent and it was like living in a warzone. Its driving me crazy. Last year was bad but this year it was much worse and probably next year even more worse.

I asked a friend living in Petchabun and he say there was no firecrackers there.

Is this a Isaan custom or is it only our village that have this stupid tradition.

What can only be described as flash bang stun grenades of firecrackers were being thrown around outside in the street last night as me, our kid and our next door neighbours took refuge behind the garden hedge.

Aggressive drunken thugs. Nothing to do with tradition or local festive customs and everything to do with antisocial behavior. My neighbours were appalled at the antics.

Still not as bad as the kite flying season during Dec/Jan. Every village seems to have these ridiculous kits flying that generate a noise that can be heard for miles around. Not so bad during the day but at night when you are trying to sleep its unbearable. I have been known to hunt around for the end of the rope with a machete in hand.

Noise is pandemic in our village (near Kaengkhro, Isaan) including firecrackers and some small bombs - or they certainly sound like it. I've seen children a/b 3-4 yrs old with lighters and these firecrackers. I wondered if parents now are not total fools. Maybe if a few fingers are blown off someone will "think" it might not be a good idea to let children participate in this ????? custom. I guess Thais are so glad "Lent" is OVER they go crazy. I can not understand how people - in our village - don't seem to be able to afford house walls or running water can afford to spend money on something to make noise????? I just don't get it.... And don't mention the loudspeakers blaring "music" or announcements as early as 4:30 am.... I use earplugs and when awake put "earmuffs" on to get some quiet, which is very precious to me.

A child here was killed by a rocket a while back, went straight into the poor kids abdomen.

It's a tragic place Issan and pretty much for one reason and one reason only . . . . Lao Kao. Most of the villagers here are off the stuff and build houses and tend neat gardens instead. But it still lurks in the background and I've noticed an increase in its consumption compared to three years ago.

Lao Kao should be banned and the ban enforced. I'm not an advocate of drugs but mild ganja is surely much less harmful than this poison.

You can easily buy ping-pong bombs. They are about 10 baht a pop. They are basically a ping-pong bomb filled with flash powder and wrapped in black tape. These things are really nasty and will easily take a hand or arm off if you're not careful. There is a smaller version of them that are made with small plastic miniture soccer ball things, stronger than your average firecracker. The fun thing about these items is that they are made with waterproof fuses. Great for fishing.

Dear Mr. Dave,

Re: URGENT

Your test results have come back from the laboratory.

Please attend an appointment at the Knobsore Road Clinic at the earliest opportunity, preferably this afternoon. The scrubbing brush and a bucket of neat Dettol have been prepared in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Porn
