webfact Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 POLITICSLearn a lesson from Mandela, pacifists urgeThe NationBANGKOK: -- Gen Ekkachai Srivilas, director of the Office of Peace and Governance at King Prajadhipok's Institute said Nelson Mandela's death should serve as a reminder for Thai people to think about losses and try to stop conflicts from going too far."Mandela's death at this time should serve as a reminder for Thais to wake up and think about the conflicts that caused so much loss in South Africa, and the patience and time it took for Mandela's peaceful fight to be successful," Ekkachai said.Chaiwat Satha-Anand, a political scientist with Thammasat University and a prominent peace scholar, said Mandela was an ordinary man who managed to change society completely."Nobody is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, his background or religion. Hatred is learned, and if people can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love, because love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."Opposition Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said Mandela's death was "the world's loss" as he was a good example of those who fought for justice and boldly faced legal action."Historically, law has been violated many times for the sake of justice. These fights were legitimate and the law was not violated for personal interest," he said. "Those who broke the law had to be ready to face legal action, and [people] cannot claim that they are fighting for the public interest just so they can be above the law."Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Mandela's death was the loss of a great advocate of peace."He is a symbol of the fight for democracy and human rights. He was a person who sacrificed for the public and was given the Nobel Peace Prize for offering reconciliation so the [south African] people could live together peacefully."-- The Nation 2013-12-07 1

Popular Post jaltsc Posted December 7, 2013 Popular Post Posted December 7, 2013 Two entirely different situations. Mandela was fighting against his people being enslaved based on the color of their skin. In Thailand the fight is among factions who have the opportunity of being in power and are fighting for the bigger piece of the pie. 3

Mandela had a good vision and was a remarkable man - however his legacy and vision is not been carried forward in South Africa - it's a disaster country !! Everyone holds Mandela up as the man who solely changed SA, there was also another man standing next to mandela when they handed out the noble peace prize, without this man.s "vision"as well, which resulted in him being accused of betraying his own people, change in SA may not have happened either What Thailand can learn from SA is that reconciliation can work, but the truth needs to come out first, which we know the ruling classes in Thailand will not want to happen Sent from my Nexus 7 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app 1

Winnie the POO. Did anyone notice that replies to the genital disorder case had more replies than this Mandela topic. Was it that that had a sexual theme,?? sad anyway-just noticed that's all.

noitom Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 And the Thai leadership cited in this article haven't got a clue what Nelson Mandela's historical struggle, fight, and success was all about.
JoeThePoster Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 And the Thai leadership cited in this article haven't got a clue what Nelson Mandela's historical struggle, fight, and success was all about. They're probably still wondering why Burma named a city after him.
Samaaw Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 And the Thai leadership cited in this article haven't got a clue what Nelson Mandela's historical struggle, fight, and success was all about. Thailand has never been colonized - as a result (one of them) - is that they live in their little cocoons - they have no idea about if they riot in BKK then tourism will drop - economy will suffer - they don't see competition, they think only of Thailand (their little cocoon) - they have missed the big picture years ago !! 2
belg Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 they can learn something from him: put the whole sinawatra family in jail for 30 years would be great for the country

Good point. Mandela was able to elevate the truth through MK Okhonto Sizwe activity first and revolution not pacifism. Gandhi, on the other hand, was a strategic pacifist who saw the big picture first. Thais cited in these articles have little or no knowledge of the historical aspects of Mandela, Ghandi, or any other true leader.
MikeENZ Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 So they should start necklacing political opponents?
steveyinasia Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Thai politics is never about helping the people, its all about seizing the power and the money. Until that attitude changes, Thai politicians can never be compared to any other selfless human.
Popular Post maximillian Posted December 7, 2013 Popular Post Posted December 7, 2013 As great a man as he turned out to be he was a founder member of the ANC's death squad. Death squad ? BS. They hadn't been targeting people. They sabotaged infrastructure. They fought against a terrible regime. Or should I say, they fought against a terrorist regime. Would have saved thousands of lives if the US, GB, France and other global players had supported the ANC instead of the apartheid regime. 5
Popular Post DocN Posted December 7, 2013 Popular Post Posted December 7, 2013 Mandela a terrorist? Because he was fighting Apartheid? So you call the Jewish Resistance in WW2 Germany terrorists, too!? 4
Somtamnication Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 More like they are following DeKlerk, not Mandela.
