Getting a UK passport for my newborn half Thai child

I've just got the email confirming my appointment to submit the application for my daughter's first British passport. The email states that all photocopied documents must be colour.

Also, regarding whether or not translated documents need to be stamped at the consulate, the guy in the translation shop (on the right as you walk in the Trendy building) told me that I don't need to.

Here's a list of what I was asked for and submitted.

Daughter:

Original Thai birth cert, colour copy & translation.

Thai passport, original and colour copies of every page.

Tambien Baan, original, colour copies & translation.

Mother (wife):

Original Thai birth cert, colour copy & translation.

Thai passport, original and colour copies of every page.

Original change of family name cert, colour copy & translation.

Original change of first name cert, colour copy & translation.

Colour copy of ID card (didn't have original or a translation of this - seemed to be ok).

Tambien Baan, colour copies and translation.

Me (father):

Original UK A4 birth cert & colour copy.

British passport, original & colour copies of every page.

Plus..

elvisp, I hope your child's passport is ready soon. May I please ask what is the circumstance of yours that might cause the 5-month consideration?

Because our case, as Liverpool team stated, is a complex natuonality issue, therefore they have to refer our document to a specialised team !!! ? father is British-Bulgarian and mother is Thai.

I hope we can fly to the UK soon, don't want daddy to miss out first few months of our child life for too long ?.

However, my hope is still up high tgat it will be quick. Application arrived at the Liverpool on 12 Dec 2014.

Thanks guys...i was requested to send some additional information which may have delayed the process.. this included a letter from my employer with my adress, family photos and a colour copy of every page of my wife's passport....i actually live about 30 miles from the Liverpool passport office but i was requested to take this ( well my wife did) information to VFS in Bangkok. This involved me sorting out some of this information, sending it to my wife who lives about 250 miles outside Bangkok which involved a 2 day trip for her and our child ( and grandma) so that this information could come back to Liverpool!!! I had submitted my wife's passport at the initial application but only included the bio page....there is nothing unusual about my application i think...it seems that Liverpool are either not acting with a great deal of urgency or they are finding it difficult to get the relevant information from the thai authorities...regardless... they have had all the additional information they required for more than 13 weeks...

It does make me smile when some folk above ( and good luck to them) state that they are getting their child passport's back after 3 week's. My child's passport did not go into examination mode until 3 weeks after being received by Liverpool passport office! Two week's later i was sent an email requesting additional information.. In addition when my wife took the additional information into VFS this took 12 days before it was received by Liverpool passport office..

Cheers..

If you are British and born in the UK then your son is British by descent and its just a case of compiling the correct documents. Descent only passes on 1 generation , so if your son had a child outside of the UK in the future they would not be entitled to British citizenship

Pinnuch...i was contacted by Liverpool passport office requesting additional information around 5 weeks after they had received it in Liverpool...at least when they contact you regarding additional information you will get your child's passport application number...you will still be expected to contact the progress team for updates of course but the staff at the passport office do sometimes reply to your emails...they won't of course tell you how far the security checks have progressed of course...if you don't hear from them i would assume that they are satisfied with the information that you have sent to them..

Cheers...

Hi ExPratt, sorry but I'm confused... are you saying that the HMPO office in Liverpool contacted you asking you to send the original Thai passports? Or are you just commenting on what I took with me when I applied?

Hi,

I called the number they gave in the website to ask about the progression. The person who answered , asked when i submitted my application so I said 10 Dec 2014, been waiting 6 weeks. He answered that average is at least 8 weeks , around 8 weeks so I was wondering whether it is true or just the answer according to the website.

I also asked if the Liverpool would like to contact me , when would they do so? He said usually before 8 weeks.

If anyone has experience, please share....I put off my ticket once, hopefully will not need to do it again!!

Fingercross & good luck everyone...

I'm a UK national living in England and my wife is a Thai national living in Bangkok. She is due to have a baby later this year, it will be born in Thailand.

Can anyone confirm the above list is everything I will need to apply for a UK passport for my child while in Thailand?

Someone was mentioning about a counter signitory, can anyone explain this a little more or have a link to more information?

Thanks.

Hi all I am also trying to get all the documents together for my daughters British passport. Sorry if this has been asked before but do the Thai translations need to be stamped by the British embassy or just by the official translator? Also will a letter from my employer work as proof of my address?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

Hi Krabicriminal,

Please look at the previous pages for confirmation, around December last year, I think I read that a couple of people use only stamps from the translation company on the ground floor of Trendy Building, where we submit the application. But I did not see those posts prior so I also certified the tranlation at the consular using service opposite the consular.

And about proof of address, I have read that someone use the employment letter stated they live in the address in Thailand but again I use Ta Bien Baan.

I have just received my son passport. :)

Good luck

Hi everyone,

I would like to share my experience, it might be useful for some people.

I am Thai, married to a British citizen by Naturalisation, he can pass on the British citizenship to our son. We live in the UK but I wanted to give birth in Bangkok, needed my family around. So my husband does not have proof of address in Thailand. I phoned and asked, they told me that I could use my name in the application form eventhough I am not the one who can pass on the British citizenship. I just needed to fill in section 8 about Naturalisation Certificate details.

Also been told by the staff who served me at VFS that if our son's got Thai passport what I need to submit are his whole Thai passport pages coloured photocopies, my passport photopage coloured copy and my husband passport photo page coloured copy. (I did the whole of everything so they took them all anyway).

However, if my son has no Thai passport what we have to submit are both my passport and my husband's passport photocopies : every page in colour.

Colour photocopy service in VFS is 25baht/page so please prepare from home:).

Good luck :)

Sorry to hear that Elvis.

Anyone know if I can get someone else to submit the passport Application at VFS on my (and my Son's) behalf? I think that I must attend in person, but may have someone collect it on my behalf. Just looking for clarification.

One more thing, do all my partners document photocopies need to be signed and dated by her?

Thanks

Only the passport applicant is permitted entry to the application centre.

• Kindly ensure that mobiles and other electronic devices are in the switched-off mode inside the application centre.

• It is not mandatory for you to be present personally to submit your passport application. You have the option of sending your application through your representative. However, the responsibility to ensure completeness and correctness of all application documents remains with the applicant. Incomplete applications will not be accepted for processing.

Nevermind, sorted! Despite the contradiction on an email received from them....I think it is fine to send a representative. Maybe they can hand it through the window.
