Safest & cheapest way to extend your stay on a Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

Hi, I haven't been to Thailand for a good few years and upon reading the Visa section here on the website I noticed, that some of the information too is a bit dated.

What I would like to know is this: What is the best way of renewing your Tourist visa for an indefinite period of time. I know that there are 30day on arrival and two months via the embassy tourist visas, but is there a limit on how often you can renew them ?

I remember to have heard a couple of years ago that people have been denied entry / the two month tourist visa when they have already spend considerable amount of time in the country. Is this decision arbitary and down to each embassy worker, or is there an actual law that prohibits one of staying more then x-days a year in Thailand?

The reason why I am asking is because I am sponsored some sort of multiple-entry hassle free visa by my employer but my soon to be wife that is going to life with me in Thailand (and isn't Thai) has to organise a visa for herself. Which is the best option most comfortable option without her handing her passport over to some seedy agency or that involves her flying to Cambodia every 30 - 60 days?

What if she pays for a student visa? I used to have one before but I think I still had to leave the country every 90 days or so - has that changed ? How much are those these days?

Thanks

Not a topic for me to advise but I've heard the ED visa rules have no changed.

you either have to get a tourist visa or a ED visa....

tourist visa easy from vientien...LOAS...or study thai with ED VISA..

I read 10 classes a year to get a stiludent visa

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

The best solution would be for you to get a one-year extension of stay for the reason of employment, which would allow your wife to get a one-year extension of stay as your dependent under clause 2.20 of Thai Police Order 777/2551. If for some reason you cannot get the extension, there are other, less convenient possibilities that can be discussed.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Thanks Maestro, that sounds like the best solution. Do you happend to know if those things are multiple entry ?

They are if you buy a Multi Re Entry Permit for 3,800 baht.

And of course if you (or both) over 50 then get a retirement visa.

Yeah,,, probably need to wait like another 25 years for that to kick in :)

I know a bit about visa but you should make sure if I am right.

  1. If you are above 50 you can get retirement visa and your wife should also get the visa based on your visa. Remember to bring all the marriage certificate and pictures when you got married. You can get a letter from your embassy to clear mention it than you are married. Your wife will get a accompanied visa. This how it should work but I know a friend of mine who got the retirement visa and police was asking 28000 for her visa, but he got it done by an agent , I think Key visa for 11000. Probably it should not cost more than couple of thousands from immigration but why they not give it is a question to find out.
  2. Even if you are on some kind of visa from your employee probably your wife should also get the accompanied visa. Ask your employee to get it for you.
  3. The Ed visa is clear, you pay about 23000-27000 depend on where you get admission. Some language schools do everything for you for that amount of money and you will be given 15 months visa which has to be extended every 3 months I guess.

I hope it helped.

The whole language school thing seems to be the most feasible option as she needs to learn Thai anyways.

Thanks

Is there a fee for a retirement visa?

How long does the visa last (does it have to be renewed)?

Any guidance on what steps to take.

Thank You ...

I reality there is no visa that is called a retirement visa.

There is a non immigrant OA visa that is based upon retirement that you obtain from an embassy or official consulate in your home country that gives a 1 year entry. The cost is 5000 baht but you also needed a medical certificate and police report. You must prove income of income equal to 65K baht or money in bank equal to 800K baht or a combination of the 2 totalling 800K baht.

There is a multiple entry non immigrant O visa that gives 90 day entries for one year that costs 5000 baht.

There are extension of stay you based upon retirement that you obtain at immigration here in Thailand. For this you need to meet the same financials as the OA visa but the money must be in a Thai bank. Cost is 1900 baht.

Today from Thai Consulate Melbourne, no more 90 Imm O visa being issued, however they will still issue under very strict circumstances ie you have a thai wife...so now only 60 day tourist visa up to 3 entries per visa issue and border crossing at end off 60days to activate the next one..retirement or ed visa wai.gif

I assume you were trying to get a multiple entry visa based upon being 50 or over for retirement. It seems that some embassies are instructing the honorary consulates under their jurisdiction not issue to them.

Your choice now is a OA visa from the embassy or the consulate in Sydney. Or get a single entry from an honorary consulate and then apply for an extension of stay here.

You've been offered some very good advice from others. However, in my experience, each officer, in each department, in each office, in each etc....is capable of doing things differently. My advice would be to get up-to-date info from the office you intend on using, and pretty close to the time you need to action things. Like everything here, it's a lottery.
