January 10, 201412 yr Hi All Will be in Kalasin and Khon Kaen for 7 weeks then moving to Yang Talat next year, whilst l have been there many times over the last 22 years l have always been a passenger, this time l am renting a car so l want to use a GPS, have any of you used a GPS in Kalasin and Khon Kaen if so do they work well in those towns? Thanks Bruce M
January 11, 201412 yr Garmin nuvi + Thailand Street Map or Thailand City Navigator will do you just fine. Be sure to get the English language, not Thai language, version map.included.
January 11, 201412 yr I use mine (Garmin) to go to the Roi Et area from Bangkokand it is pretty accurate even down to the tracks between the rice fields. There are a couple of problems which is why the GPS is not 100% reliable. On the way up it tries to get me to go down a 2nd grade goat track of a road as that is the shortest way, on the way back to Bangkok the latest version of the maps tries to get me to go via Ayuttaha after coming back through Saraburi. So whilst you will get there it is worthwhile knowing the main roads and the route you expect to use. The other trick is if trying to find an address, good luck with that, however the trick I use is to get the coordinates from Google Earth and enter them in as the destination, lots easier. It finds hotels, shopping centres and similar points of interest OK though. Cheers
January 11, 201412 yr Author Thanks for all the advice guys, There really helpful. One more question if l can. l read somewhere in another forum that the Garmins in Thailand are modified in some way, l was planning on buying mine in Australia and putting a card in for the Thai Map does anybody know if there is any truth to that? Thanks Bruce
January 12, 201412 yr I bought my Garmin in Aust and use a SD card for Thailand. The Garmin loses a bit of functionality by operating in English instead of Thai using the Thai maps, something about junction view from memory. Not a big deal though. Cheers
January 22, 201412 yr Author l have got my Garmin 2797LMT and have received the thai/English sd card, have inserted it and get all the maps in English, however don't get any vocals as it will not lock onto our satellites in Australia in the Thai map mode. My way of thinking is if the maps are in English so will the vocals? Agree or disagree? Thanks Bruce M
January 22, 201412 yr From memory mine had vocals in English using the Thai maps on SD card, but I turn it off as I find the vocals annoying. To much like a nagging wife for my liking. Have a search for something in Thailand and see if the maps come up in English, if so should be OK. Cheers
January 22, 201412 yr Author l can zoom into kalasin and khon Kaen etc and even the small streets are in English so hopefully the vocals will be as well, if not l can go by the visuals, so all is good. Bruce M
January 23, 201412 yr I bought my Garmin in Aust and use a SD card for Thailand. The Garmin loses a bit of functionality by operating in English instead of Thai using the Thai maps, something about junction view from memory. Not a big deal though. Cheers If you want to use junction view in Thailand on your Ozzy Garmin unit there is now a tool available to patch the JCV file. It is available for free here http://www.noeman.org/gsm/software-tools/311926-garmin-asian-jcv-tool-v1-0-a.html
January 24, 201412 yr i would buy the cheapest garmin nuvi at gadget trend in amarin plaza, i think it runs about 3000 baht. it is great. out in the sticks you have to watch out the route it picks will sometimes have to be modified a little, as somebody mentioned. i love mine. the best thing about it is once you have it a couple of years you have these spots to return to that you have marked and now they are very easy to find.
January 24, 201412 yr I found that the best maps were those provided by Nokia. Plus the Nokia would automatically download new maps as you moved. That was a few years ago however. I understand that Nokia is not what it once was...
