Iranian dies after jetski crash off Phuket island

PHUKET: -- An Iranian tourist died yesterday afternoon (January 13) after he crashed his rented jet-ski off Naka Noi island.

Police were called to Thalang hospital after the body of the 27-year-old man arrived there about an hour after the accident. They noted that there were no wounds or any signs of violence committed on the victim. It appeared that he had drowned.

Pa Khlok Tambon Rescue staff told police that they had learned the victim was staying at the Blue Ocean Studio hotel in Patong and was on a day trip to Naka Noi.

After hiring the jet-ski he had travelled barely 300 metres from the beach when the accident happened.

Beach life guards went to his aid but were unable to revive him. They brought his body by boat to Ao Por Pier, from where it was taken by ambulance to Thalang Hospital.

The Iranian Consulate has been contacted so that the dead man’s family can be informed.

PHUKET: -- Police have yet to establish what caused a 27-year-old Iraqi tourist to die after he fell from his jet-ski at Naka Island, off the east coast of Phuket, yesterday afternoon.

Mariwan Qader Salim, 27, from Iraq, was pronounced dead by doctors at Thalang Hospital at 5pm, Thalang Police Deputy Superintendent Kitthiphum Thinthalang told the Phuket Gazette.

“He was staying at a resort in Patong and went to Koh Naka on a day-trip,” Lt Col Kitthiphum explained.

“Jet-ski staff said they saw him fall off the jet-ski less than 500 meters from the beach at about 3:15pm, but they said he fell without hitting any object,” he added.

On seeing that Mr Salim was not attempting to get back on the jet-ski, the staff rushed out to assist him.

“They took him by boat to Ao Por Pier [map here], where the Pa Khlok Administration Organization rescue team sped him to Thalang Hospital. However, by then it was too late,” Col Kitthiphum explained.

The Iraqi Embassy in Bangkok has been notified of the incident.

“I haven't received the report from the hospital as to cause of death. At this stage, all we know is that it seems he passed out before falling off the jet-ski,” Col Kitthiphum said.

“He was only 27 and looked strong. However, we do not know if he had an underlying disease that may have resulted in his death,” he added.

...it seems like nobody can rent a jetski without incident...and the bottom line is.....'farang pay'.....

.......300 meters.....crashed with nothing......with a life jacket on.........???

Easy to fall off, easy to drown if one cannot swim, not sure if crash is the right word if there were no others involved.

How can someone that cant swim rent a jetski ? facepalm.gif and where was his life jacket ?

Not long ago in Pattaya a young Russian hired big motorcycle had high speed crash in Jomtiem cut himself in two

on lamppost. A short while after a second Russian died after cutting off his leg.

I would put money on neither of these two having a licence.

Going back to the jetski I don't understand how he drowned if he was wearing a lifejacket, which will always be supplied

Not really , but thats nothing to be with an Iranian drown or what im asking ? . If you dont have common sense this can happen in thailand or just behind home

Yep , but by other way i have to agree with you that many people left common sense at home when travel to Thailand

RIP to the dead man, regardless of where he is from.

I'm curious as to whether he was wearing a life vest while riding the jet ski. If so, why did he drown. If not, why?

There is a difference between a LIFE JACKET and a BOUYANCY VEST .. Bouyancy vests , which are the ones supplied for most water sports will act as a Bouyancy Aid , that is you can still float face down . A Life Jacket is designed to float an unconscience victim face up , they are larger and not practical for most water sports ..... Unfortunatly ..... coffee1.gif

I suggest we nominate this one for the Thai Visa Conspiracy Award of the month.

You forgot to mention that possibly it was an abduction attempt by aliens gone wrong. A rookie pilot did not correctly beam him up and he fell back.

But seriously, strokes, heart attacks. hemorrhage happen obviously more to the elderly and the unfit but not exclusively. It happens to young people in perfect health as well. Could have been anything but we do not know. Let the doctors find out what happened to the guy.

with the life jacket, even if you do not know how to swim, you will not be drowned because life jacket floats you

Not if you are unconscious and the vest is not the type to keep your head up above water while taking a nap.
