PDRC activist urges police to safeguard protesters

BANGKOK: -- A core leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) Issara Somchai this morning called on the police to step up patrol security to safeguard anti-government protesters following last night’s bomb and gun attacks at protest sites and his home in Bangkok.

Issara, the former party-list MP of the Democrat Party, inspected the scene of the bomb attack on Lard Prao intersection this morning.

He showed a grenade shrapnel to media representatives saying the opponents are turning to more violent means to disrupt protesters.

He then called on the police to step up security to safeguard protesters at all protest sites as now it was certain that there was armed group resorting to violent means to intimidate protesters with no regard to the live of innocent people fighting peacefully.

He also said that his home in a housing estate in Laksi, Bang Khen was also attacked with a bomb.

He said that the bomb was thrown into his house at about 2.00 a.m. and fell at a motorcycle basket and exploded.

But he said that it might be a small bomb as it did not cause serious damage adding that it might be because his home is located in densely populated area.

He said his car was parked inside the house as this might mislead his assailants into thinking that he was at home last night.

Fortunately, he just sent his car home and spent the night at the protest site, he said.

Neighbors also told him that after the explosion, the attackers were also seen to await the house owner to come out to see either to attack again, he said.

Protesters Camps Attacked By Gunfire, Bombs

BANGKOK: -- Unidentified assailants have attacked two rally sites of anti-government protesters in Bangkok last night.

The fist attack took place at Ladprao intersection where supporters of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) have been occupying as a part of their "Bangkok Shutdown" campaign.

Witnesses said assailants on a vehicle sped past the camp site and threw an explosive device at the barricades before fleeing the scene. No injury has been reported.

Initial investigation suggests that the bomb was a homemade explosive device. PCAD security guards have collected the bomb′s shrapnel and handed them to police officers for further investigation.

Another protest camp site near Rajavinit School in Dusit district also came under gunfire attack last night. Witnesses said individuals on a white Honda Jazz, whose license plate is said to be 1กย 8088, sprayed gunfire at the protest barricade lines and sped away in the darkness. No injury has been reported.

The camp site was under supervision of the Student and People Network for Thailand Reform (STR) at the time of the attack.

After the incident, STR guards forbade journalists from entering the protest site, citing concerns that the assailants might return for another round of attack.

The guards also stepped up their security measures around the protest camp, such as prohibiting vehicles from approaching the camp and increasing the guards′ patrols. The atmosphere at the STR rally site was said to be tense throughout the night.

This is not red shirts/white shirts, this is citizens of Bangkok who are sick and tired of the southern thugs destroying their city and economy.

You must be that sick citizen in Bangkok!

Bunny you love to quote me. Why? You can't stand the truth being told. licklips.gif

and what make you sure that is the truth ? you have information that nobody else have ?

I guess some PDRC officials believe that government police can still provide a useful service and protection. Good to know!

It would seem the article suggests only that the police 'should' be able to.

IYO.... Not factually-based, (unless you can provide proof). I'm surprised that you didn't say it was the southern folk trying to garner sympathy... coffee1.gif

So they want police not to enforce the law so they can shut down Bangkok, but to enforce it so they don't get harmed in the process.

I agree with you ! there leader is a wanted person, who should first be arrested, the protest should turn non-violent, and than the Police could protect the protesters.

Suthep spends a large portion of his rants abusing the police as good for nothing thugs and then they turn around & ask for their protection. They should just hire a few more southern guards with outstanding arrest warrants.

Suthep spends a larger portion of his speeches on "awk pai Shinawatras'.

Now of course he's also not impressed by the police who dropped his arrest warrant by plane instead of handing it to him rolleyes.gif

BTW the topic is PDRC urges, not 'Suthep urges'. This may come as a surprise but they are not the same.

The protest is non-violent, but there is violence against the protesters. If there was no violence against the protesters, they wouldn't need protection.

Really? Southern thugs are the problem? Hum, I thought the problem is the Shinawatra clan...

The Shinawatra (Thai: ชินวัตร; RTGS:Chinnawat; Thai pronunciation: [tɕʰīn.nā.wát]) family is a wealthy and powerful Thai Chinese family. Below is a list of prominent family members.

You are both wrong!

But then again...mai pen rai...

At this point there can no longer be any doubt. The protesters are now being targeted with bombs on a nightly basis. As the red shirt movement has an ignominious record with bombs from the terror of the attacks at Ratchaprason in 2010 - including the mindless gutting of the Central World building in Bangkok, they are the obvious, obvious source of suspicion to anyone who has a brain, a TV set, a radio, a newspaper, or any media outlet in a free society. What we do know is this - they are heavily armed. We also know - they are crazy. Because sane people would not throw bombs in the middle of the night at innocent - and often sleeping - Thai men and women on the streets. We also know that they have no sense of morality - nor will anyone who even implies sympathy for what they are doing. We also know that by their actions they actually underscore the need for the protest, they underscore how sick the underpinnings of security - or rather the lack of it - really are. They know how ineffectual the police are. When the police are needed, they are no where to be found. They appear the next day and calmly confirm to everyone that they have no idea what they're doing. So naturally these atrocities continue. But these perpetrators only really succeed in one thing by these attacks. They now clearly identify themselves as monsters.

Ok, so you call seizing a capital is non-violence , or with violence you mean only fighting, hitting, shooting, bombing, NO, seizing and encourage people to take others hostage is violent.

If Suthep was worried about the safety of his protesters he'd have one or two protest sites which makes it much easier to police. Having 20 sites across the city is more like guerilla warfare tactics.

And what is the point of marching through Petchburi, Ekkamai, Thonglor the busiest areas, at the busiest time if not creating maximum inconvenience for citizens and insuring somewhere somehow an idiot will snap and he can start pointing fingers?

The police should be employed to protect the PM and government as K Suthep has been ordering people to kidnap them and not worrying about the troublemaking anarchists who are attempting to close BKK and impose their minority will on the people. Don't tell me they're not a minority - if they were a majority they'd go to the polls like civilised people

I find it odd that the PDRC would make such request when they threatened to abduct the Prime Minister and other government officials... Wonder if there are cracks now beginning to open among the ranks of the PDRC?

Probably PDRC is getting fed up with lots of police around but no protection.
