Photograph: Sasha Mordovets/Getty Vladimir Putin has said that gay people will be not be subjected to harassment at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, as long as they stay away from children. Putin is currently in Sochi reviewing preparations for the Games, which begin in three weeks. During a meeting with some of the thousands of volunteers who will work during the Olympics, he was asked why their uniforms were rainbow coloured, given the recent Kremlin anti-gay initiatives. "We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships," said Putin in comments reported by Russian agencies. "We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/17/vladimir-putin-gay-winter-olympics-children?CMP=twt_gu
Popular Post anon8
Putin of course knows all his talk about endangering children and Russian youth is fabricated hysteria. State sanctioned persecution of minorities is his own pet project. This last statement from him is particularly vicious and low shot, hey gay peeps, you are welcome to Sochi, but please, dont touch our children! LOL. Who is Putin to blame for the failing economy, huge unemployment, and the miserable place Russia is for most Russians in a year 2014? Break away regions like Chechnya was his first project, and for his purposes a successful one, many Russians believe most misery is caused by a small break away region. War has always been an effective distraction from failed internal policies and failing economy, who is gonna complain that they have no heat in some Russian cities apartement blocks, we are at war! And now its gays, and rotten Western values! Historically Russian, and not only Russian rulers blame Jews. But it's been done so many times now in past century, people may not buy it. So he found a next target. It is always some inner threat, that prevents Russia to prosper, it is never the failing regime itself. Question is, why are so many Russians falling for this? They are educated people, most are. What is it with totalitarian regimes, like Germany in 30s, Russia in 2014, that make sane people lose their minds, and support something so clearly evil, hateful and wrong? Langsuan Man
Isn't this just the rantings of a homophob I'm not even gay and it disturbs me that he would even think that anyone would come to the Olympics for the purpose of molesting children
Scott
As long as gays are marginalized and persecuted they will be in the shadows and in the darkness of the shadows lurks all kinds of bad things. Thus the strong association between gays and pedophiles. It's a kind of educated ignorance. Gays and pedophiles in Russia are in the same category because they have been put there by the gov't, much like heroin and meth addicts are put in the same category with someone who smokes marijuana. Once the persecution stops and gays can live a more open life, they will begin to see they aren't a lot different than anyone else.

Suradit69
He might turn his child-protecting attention to a problem that exists in reality, not his warped imagination: According to various estimates, 50 to 95 percent of children who grow up in Russian orphanages become drug addicts or alcoholics or commit suicide. Russian orphanages essentially produce children who suffer from Mowgli Syndrome — that is, they are ill-equipped to function in any capacity in society. Neither is the situation particularly rosy regarding Russian adoptive parents. According to official government statistics, a child adopted by Russian parents is 39 times more likely to die than one adopted by parents in the West. Of course, the causes of death include not only murder and involuntary manslaughter but also car accidents, illness and other factors. Unfortunately, even those statistics understate the problem because Russian courts often fail to initiate criminal proceedings when children are the victims of mistreatment or abuse. For example, the dead bodies of girls 15 years old and younger were discovered in Nizhny Tagil in 2008. A prostitution ring had kidnapped the girls and murdered them when they refused to become prostitutes. In the end, not a single criminal charge was ever filed in the case. Similarly, no criminal investigation was opened when four young women disappeared in Kursk in 2001. Nine years later, a person walking his dog discovered their remains. The girls had been raped and murdered by four young men. But the killers were released, in part because one of them was the son-in-law of a local Federal Security Service agent. Scott
Russian President Putin links gays to pedophiles MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered new assurances to gay athletes and fans attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month. Yet he defended Russia's anti-gay law by equating gays with pedophiles and said Russia needs to "cleanse" itself of homosexuality if it wants to increase its birth rate. Putin's comments in an interview broadcast Sunday with Russian and foreign television stations showed the wide gulf between the perception of homosexuality in Russia versus the West. http://news.yahoo.com/russian-president-putin-links-gays-pedophiles-122800122--spt.html
anon8
Birth rate really is low. Most Russians are struggling to pay their bills, in supermarkets people are carefully checking prices for food, cos if not careful, they may go hungry before next pay day. That is the reason for low birth rate. Russians are educated, they don't have the means to support their children, they know it very well, so the birth rate is low. What do gay people have to with this is mystery. I wish Vladimir would elaborate how are gay people to blame for birth rate. Does he believe Russia is so tensly packed by gay couples, the birth rate keeps declining because half or most of all Russian males are having sex with other men? lol Sent from my C6802 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

anon8
Interesting article in WaPo, right now a headline at Huffpost: 'The Olympics aren’t supposed to kill people. They’re supposed to exalt them. But it’s too late to take the dangerous, despoiling Winter Games away from the thugocracy that is Vladimir Putin’s Russian regime, so the only option is to count on the man’s bulging biceps and hope it’s an adequate “ring of steel” that can keep people safe in Sochi. It’s a cold hard fact that these Olympics have become an agent of death.' anon8
Too late to edit my post, wanted to add, please read, never has a hugely prestiguos media outlet put so bluntly, and accurately, what a mistake it was for IOC to give Olimpics to Russia, WP desctibes todays Russia as 'thugocracy', and article uses lines like: 'Sochi already is a catastrophe, and if it becomes a tragedy too, it will be because the International Olympic Committee has become the tool of colossal authoritarian branding, to borrow a phrase from Russia scholar Leon Aron.'
