Lack of understanding for highly-gifted children may hinder their development

A child expert voices concern over the future of highly-gifted children as families and society fail to give them understanding and make the maximum use of their potential.

Usanee Anuruthawong (อุษณีย์ อนุรุทธ์วงศ์), head of the Highly-Gifted Children Promotion and Development Project of Srinakharinwirot University, said highly-gifted children have very high potential and can become geniuses if being treated with understanding.

Mrs. Usanee said these children, however, have difficulties living their lives because parents do not understand them and teachers are not patient with them and often see them as aggressive. She said the children may develop emotional problems which can affect their potential.

She said the project will hold a seminar on the promotion and development of highly-gifted children tomorrow. The ratio of these special children to the population is 10:10,000, she added.
