The United States has called on Thailand to immediately de-escalate tensions with Cambodia and agree to a ceasefire amid an ongoing border dispute between the two nations.

In an official statement released by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, it was confirmed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone discussion with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sengyempong earlier on 27 July.

Secretary Rubio expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and stressed the urgent need for restraint. He urged the Thai government to reduce hostilities and commit to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia to avoid further destabilisation in the region.

The US diplomat also underscored President Trump’s strong desire for peace and reiterated Washington’s position that an immediate halt to the fighting is essential.

“The United States stands ready to facilitate future discussions aimed at fostering peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia,” the statement read.

The border conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbours has intensified in recent weeks, drawing concern from international observers. This latest intervention by Washington reflects growing international pressure on both sides to pursue diplomatic solutions.

  • You say it's "obvious" now tell us why? The way I see it is Hun Sen planned this not Thailand.

  • They aren't acting aggressive enough, they need to take the fight to Cambodia now, surgical airstrikes around the clock would work. Also, hunt down Hun Sen and Hun Manet, eliminate them permanently.

Trump’s got this.

The two sides in question aren’t as hard headed as Putin.

Firing rockets into a 7/11 without warnings' killing a dozen civilians would be the cause of that 🤔

This comment might work with a smiley.
But the thread itself is dubious… the warmonger telling another not to protect itself. Butt out USA!

In other words, Thailand is behaving aggressively according to the Trump administration.

@ThreeCardMonte Trump has nothing. They roundly ignored him and carried on doing what they were doing. Otherwise we wouldn't have Rubio having a go.

You are seriously 'sucking' up to Trump. It's weird.

If Thailand had a currently serving PM, she should tell Trump "We will consider a ceasefire when you release unredacted Epstein files".

Why can't Thailand play god, telling the rest of the world what to do?

@ThreeCardMonte I think we can all see that you simply are not in possession of enough intelligence to even understand any aspect of the current agreement. Foot soldier 😊

This is how it works Hans.

You follow my orders.  Just like you did before like a good boy.

 I don’t follow yours.

Don’t like it.  Cry me a river.

And neither of the 2 men meeting today holds real power of decision in the current circumstance.

It's clear who it is in Cambodia (Daddy), but not clear now in Thailand ...

@dinsdale He called, but they didn't stop. Rubio had to call again. Either way, let's hope they find agreement.

Your JOB here seems to be to try to deflect all accusations and to praise whenever possible, even if totally ridiculous. How much are they paying you for that?

You remind me of someone.

And it STILL has nothing to do with the USA or Trump.

It is solely an ASEAN problem. Leave it to ASEAN to sort out.

Hun Sen has declared himself a 5-Star general, the only one in Cambodian history. I would say he holds "real power". The good part about that, is he is now a viable military target, so killing him would not be an assassination of a political figure.

My understanding is that it's Sonny Boy who will be representing Cambodia at the meeting ...

What did you get that from? Cambodia is bombing civilian targets. Should Thailand just stand down and let them go on, without response?

In my opinion, you should be deported to Cambodia.

Hun Sen wanted to tell the truth about the Shin family and Thaksin as he thinks he is Thailand started the problems.. Of course it is pretending that it is about border or a temple, but he admitted that he wanted to teach Hun Sen a lesson...
