EOD chief says two fertilizer bombs are live and ready to explode

BANGKOK: -- The chief of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) says the two fertilizer bombs planted separately at the fence wall of the court compound on Ratchadapisek are live and ready to explode.

The bombs were first employed by southern insurgents in the trouble-plagued provinces in the South but it was the first time to be planted here in the capital.

These two explosive devices which were snuck into the grounds of the Court of Justice on Ratchadapisek Road early in the morning would have resulted in major destruction had they gone off.

The first was concealed in a trash can next to a ‘Smart Taxi’ stop located at the front of the Office of the Attorney General which is in the court compound.

EOD was forced to use high pressure water gun to disable the electric circuit of the device.

It was found to set to go off by alarm clock.

The device was composed of urea fertilizer or ammonium nitrate and contained in a used 15 kg fire extinguisher canister.

EOD police said the destructive radius will cover an area between 20 – 40 meters.

The second bomb was discovered concealed at the base of an power pole in front of the Judicial Training Center located approximately one kilometer from the first device.

EOD chief Pol Col Kamtorn Ouicharoen said the bombs were made by a trained expert adept in bomb assembly and bears close similarities to explosive devices made by southern insurgents. This is the first time that such a device has been found in capital.

He said it was fortunate they were discovered and disabled before they could go off.

He said he could not yet determine the detonation time yet as much of the alarm clocks were destroyed by the water gun.

But he admitted that both bombs were in full working order and ready to be detonated before they would be disabled.

Meanwhile National Police Deputy Commissioner Pol Gen Worapong Chiewpreecha said that it was impossible to determine the time of detonation with any certainty as much of the alarm clocks were destroyed by the blast of high pressure water from the water guns and only one dial from one of the clocks survived and showed 9 o’clock on its alarm dial.

He said the two bombs are categorized as F4 explosive devices as opposed to the more well-known C4 type.

In this circumstance, the devices were to be detonated by alarm clocks and are widely used by insurgents in the three southern provinces.

There are several other types of bombs that are employed by insurgents and this type has been in use for around 4 -5 years in the south, he said.

In closing, he stated that these bombs can easily be made by anyone with knowledge of explosives and what remains now is the investigation of closed-circuit television footage to see if any leads can be made.

The location of both devices is within 100 meters proximity from military bunkers located at the front of the courts.

Widely used by Southern Insurgents. Of course we do not say it was Suthep himself, but he does have some funny looking characters around him.

Interesting the bias this National Police Deputy Commissioner Pol Gen Worapong Chiewpreecha seem to show. At least k. Surapong was more diplomatic with

"Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said that this morning’s bomb incident at the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) was caused by its withdrawal from the mediator’s role offered earlier by the seven independent agencies to resolve the current political impasse."

That could be interpreted in almost anyway, including his "believed that the new leader of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship would be able to bring peace back to the country."

Rubl, you are as bad as the media with your transparently implied links between bomb incidents and the UDD. Do run along.

Actually I just implied that the near automatic link the police seems to make between bombs found and Southern insurgents seems to show some bias.

Of course if you think that there is some reason to think that the UDD may have been involved somehow, who am I to say you're wrong in that thinking rolleyes.gif.pagespeed.ce.hZ59UWKk-s.gif alt=rolleyes.gif width=20 height=20>

There could be a connection to the Sth, if their type of signature in the making of the bomb is present, this is the same signature that is used in Indonesia, this has been on the agenda with the regional security agency's ,that terrorists would start aiming at BKK during the political protests.

So you did miss the war drums, the threats, the messages in their speeches, from the red rouge liege lords?

Everybody in the picture has gathered very very close - and that tape measure is impressive - wonder what it proves? Evidently their training doesn't cover those scenarios where a second bomb has been placed and timed to go off once the 1st responders arrive. Of course, if the training didn't cover it then it would never ever happen... would it?

The Southern separatist movement bombings started during the term of Thaksin as Prime Minister. It statered after he removed the 4th Army and installed the Police as Security in the South. Since then bombings of this kind happen far too often. One can only conclude that its is Thaksins himself (withe help of his police buddies) who are behind all these troubles.

No, they will be protected by the fact that they have been defused.

"One can only conclude..."

'The bombings in the South started during Thaksin's premiership therefore Thaksin must be behind these bombs'?

It beggers belief as to what passes as logic and deduction to some around here.

Shameful and disgusting beyond words. The people who planted these cowardly and evil devices should be thrown in jail and stay there until they are dead. They are lower than any creature on Earth. Their political affiliations are irrelevant to me, these people are cold-blooded psychopaths and they make me ashamed to be a human being.

Plus, Incantations for Good Luck and a pocket full of amulets will always help. Let's just throw some pixie dust on it for good measure!

Perhaps a length of Primacord (ie.,detonation cord) filled with Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN).
