British man, 29, drowns at all-night full moon party in Thailand

Featured Replies

A British man has died after getting caught in a rip-tide at an all night beach party on the island of Ko Phangan in Thailand - the island made famous by the film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Alex Wyithe, 29, was on a holiday of a lifetime on the sun-kissed island, where full moon parties - featured in the 2000 film The Beach - are popular among travellers.

It is a well known venue for drink and drugs hedonism and DJs who play all night to crowds of around 30,000 at the monthly parties at Haad Rin Beach.

Wasn't "The Beach" filmed on Phi Phi Lae?

That fish harpoon scene in the article certainly seems to be from Phi Phi Lae.

Sorry that anyone that young should die.

“ …was on a holiday of a lifetime on the sun-kissed island …”

It certainly seems that English newspapers reporting on the misadventures of British persons in Thailand must pay their writers based on the number of over-worked clichés they can manage to use. And the piece seems more concerned with the supposed proximity to where Leonardo DiCaprio may have been and the deceased's receding hairline than with the loss of life. I guess it must be some odd & quirky cultural approach to reporting death.

I dont remember there being a scene about the full moon party in "The Beach"

It was filmed there, but the story was set in Koh Phangan and the Ang Thong marine park.

so so sad, .. like i always say, we never know whats around the corner.. maybe just as well eh.

R.I.P.

Why so they let people swim at night? Bit of a dumb move no? Rip

I live on a Samui beach since 25 years and to forbid swimming at night sounds really strange. Had Rin is a beach too and the whole idea of the FMP is a full moon party on a nice beach, where it is also possible to go swimming if you want to.

In that movie, they meant with FMP that short sequenz, when they came over to KPG for provisions.

Would also not characterize a trip to Thailand as a holiday of a lifetime. That's just a normal holiday as normal as skiing in Austria, maybe even more normal.

These parties are uncontrollable and Thais show little or no respect for law.

Post containing a flame removed.

Some may wonder what 30k revellers are supposed to do, given the lack of toilet facilities.

(Portaloo aka "Turdis". The few that are/were there are often full before 2000hrs!)

I was at the FMP last weekend, there were plenty of toilets. Still doesn't explain why people think banning swimming is an option.
