Easy Pass to be installed on motorways

BANGKOK: - The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) is now negotiating with the Department of Highways to introduce the ‘Easy Pass’ system on its motorway system.

EXAT governor Aiyanat Thinaphai stated Monday that negotiation with the Department of Highways for the implementation of the ‘Easy Pass’ toll collecting system has made substantial progress and promises closure in the near future.

He said what remains is the issue of Value Added Tax (VAT). As of the present, tolls collected on EXAT expressways are VAT inclusive whilst tolls collected on the motorway system is not.

As of the present, the EEAT database reveals that there have been more than 700,000 Easy Pass cards issued and on average more than 400,000 users of these cards daily.

Should the negotiations succeed, it is expected that there will be an increase in Easy Pass users of between 50,000 – 60,000 per day in the first year alone, he said,.

The not so Easy Pass still sucks. They still have to man the booths because of the occasional hiccup in the electronic reading of the cards. Sometimes the lines are longer in the Easy Pass lanes than the cash ones. When will Thailand get it right??

..in several cases the lines in the Easy Pass lanes of the Chaengwattana Express Way were longer because cars without the prepaid electronic system stayed in the reserved lines for Easy Pass until the very last moment and then cars in the other lanes refused to let them enter in their lanes

Merging corruptions could take a long time.

Maybe in 30 years when they finally get the sense to install a similar system to Singapore and Australia known as electronic tolling using so-called e-tags. You simply drive through the gentry at a speed of say 80km/h and hear a beep when the toll has been charged to your account and of course there are no people to man the system as there's no need! But wait, I'm getting way ahead of myself here! Although elevated tollways were able to be built, an electronic system of toll collection is too hard?

A very interesting article about easypass online today. Apparently the "authorities" in the US have been using it in New York to track motorists over 3000 miles of roadway. A man was suspicious and rigged up his card to alert him when it was being read.
