Hi can a tekkie help please.

I download my films and tv series from the internet, all dvdrips, no web cams so the quality is very good, or should be.

But when I play them through my media player connected to a new good spec tv the audio is not so great, I've gotta turn the sound up really loud to hear, its the same for all downloads.

same thing happens if I connect to the tv with just a USB stick.. i.e. no media player.

My question is do you think its the download source audio quality or the tv sound system, and would it help if I purchased a tv cinema surround sound system ?

Thank you for your help.

First, what audio quality do you get when you play the file on your computer (using headphones or earbuds)?

  1. When you play the file via the media player the line-level audio is generated by the media player and then amplified by the TV.
  2. When you play the file via usb stick the TV the line-level audio is generated by the TV and then amplified by the TV.

If both of these have poor audio then it's probably the TV (as that is what they have in common)

If you download and play .mp3 music files, does it do the same thing?

What audio quality does the TV have otherwise (when connected to Cable or SAT box)?

Does the TV have a AUDIO SETTINGS in a SETUP MENU?

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Quality playing through my laptop was perfect.

Downloaded a couple of audio mp3 files and played them through the media player and USB, quality was not perfect like playing through the laptop but OK, but I think its easier to pickup audio from songs than a film.

TV audio from sat box or cable seems fine.

And yes the TV has audio settings in setup,

Clear voice is set to maximum

Sound mode set to cinema, but have tried changing his but no difference.

Do you think I need a better audio TV or would a sound system with this TV help ?......its a new TV less than 1 year old... LG.

Again thanks for your help

The AUDIO into the TV should all have the same quality and sound about the same -- though some audio may play at different 'levels' because each device connected to an input (HDMI / Component / Composite / USB / Tuner / etc) probably outputs a different level

This is why I asked I asked you about the audio quality from the other inputs.

TV audio from sat box or cable seems fine.

If the audio from the SAT or CABLE box seems fine then that says (at least on that signal input type) that the TV 'can' produce clear/loud audio.

Quality playing through my laptop was perfect.

This tells me that your SOURCE files are fine. We'll use the audio quality you heard from the laptop as the standard.
Is it possible to connect your LAPTOP to your TV via an HDMI -out connector? As the computer can produce good audio, will it come clear/loud through the TV as it's supposed to?

I expected the Internal TV USB Player to play the .mp3 audio files loud/clear. No reason the SAT/CABLE audio and the Internal USB Player should be different. Very odd.

I usually find it 'cleaner' and more straight forward to listen to the audio through the TV. But so far the TV isn't doing very well carrying the audio. We don't know what/where the issue is (other than probably in the TV).
Normally if the TV has an AUDIO-OUT we use that to connect to a simple External Audio Sound System so the TV selects both the Video and Audio source at the same time.
If the TV can't do this (or has audio issues) then it's better to buy an External Audio Sound System that allows multiple inputs (and input types) and use IT to select the A/V source that then goes on to the TV. These systems also usually decode surround sound through multiple speakers.

I had a similar problem with the TV audio output from different channels on the TV, satellite or cable, and when viewing movies from a USB drive.

Turned on "Auto Volume" using the (Samsung) TV sound menu and there was a considerable improvement.

Hi RichCor

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, had a few days away.

I connected my LAPTOP to my TV via HDMI

The audio was not as clear as if I played it through the laptop. It's not as though I can't hear the audio its just a lower quality.

Do you think it looks like the TV audio output is just not good enough. So maybe a decent TV surround sound system might be the answer, their not very expensive ?

Thank you again for your help, really appreciate it, nice to speak to someone who knows his stuff !!

I have a little home theater system. I do notice that many (not all) downloads play at a low volume. I am able to crank up my receiver to levels I NEVER would when watching tv, but when I do, the sound is great. In other words, during whatever compression was used to make the file, the audio probably just gets "chopped off" for lack of a better term. The compression may lower the volume, but the quality is there. You just gotta watch out when you switch your sources on the receiver is all.

I have a low end yamaha receiver, cost under 10,000 baht. Highly, highly recommended. Good speakers dont hurt either of course.

Thank you Suradit69 for your reply.

Its a LG make TV and checked the audio settings and Auto Volume is switched on

Have you tried turning it OFF? (desperate measures I know).

I am pretty sure Format Factory has an option for increasing the volume

when transferring the file.

When programming content contains Enhanced Audio Encoding for playback on 5.1 Surround System there can be an 18dB level difference in normal audio level playback -- some of this is needed to create more dynamic range (reserving loudness for dramatic scenes), or some parts of the audio are segmented to Low Frequency Effects and cause the normal (stereo) audio to sound muted.

Actual DVDs and some Digitally Delivered programming will contain alternate audio streams that can be selected to suite the type of audio playback you have.

Then again, sometimes the source was just recorded at a different audio level.

I'd say the problem is in the TV.

So a decent Surround Sound System might be in your future.

It's possible that a simple 2.1 Stereo with Bass speaker system would work for you, these systems usually only allow 2 sources using RCA connectors. If your connected devices use HDMI or Optical then you'll need a more expensive Home Theatre type system.

You will need to determine how many devices you'll want to connect to it, and the type, and what TYPE OF DECODING it will provide.

As for expense... they're the same as buying a car. The one you really want will be out of your price range, and the one you can afford you'll not want to be seen next to.

Ha Ha......So true, I think its time for a new TV and a decent surround system, we do like to sit and watch a really good film.

Thank you so much for all your time and effort in helping me out. Your a real tekkie, so many people on these forums pretend to be something their not.

Thanks again.....
