Hello,

I live in Hawaii now and am looking to move to Thailand. I work with special education children and adults here and am looking to do the same in Thailand. My specialty is outdoor education and mostly with autistic students. Any assistance in helping me to open some doors would be appreciated.

Aloha, Ron

Special Education is still very new in Thailand and working here is very different than the West. Many parents feel that they "lose face" by even admiting that their child is different. As an added problem, doctors don't ask for/take feedback for the kids that take meds.

I tried to establish a Special Ed program in a prestigious international program. The administration smiled at my suggestions but were unwilling to make any changes... not even allowing dyslexic kids out of taking a third and fourth language in high school to make time for additional support. After producing mounds of paperwork and alternative suggestions, they quickly lost interest and discontinued the program.

My biggest suggestions are: work in a regular Thai school first so you understand the educational culture here and then get work at an established school that already does Special Ed.
