What makes Savannakhet so special......?

Recommended Posts

I was there last week. Along with what everyone else said to bring they also asked to see my original marriage certificate which they just looked at and gave back to me and they also wanted a copy of my wives paper showing she officially changed her last name to mine. I didn't know about that paper but luckily my wife brought it along.. It is very easy and stress free.

Has anyone done it at savannakhet for just having a thai child but not actually married? If so, what did you bring instead of the marriage certificate?

Unless you are the legal father of your child by way of legitimization you will not get a multiple entry visa in Savannakhet.

There was a report of a person being denied recently.

What legitimization paperwork did they request?

It would have to be documents from an Amphoe that were done upon a court order or if you child is 7 or over done directly by the Amphoe. Your child's mother must also grant you custody of your child.

Although I have the original marriage papers, my wife chose to keep her own name. I guess this won't be a problem.

VIP bus was 620bt from Mo Chit terminal. Left there at 2030 Sunday night and arrived at Mukdahan 0645 Monday morning. Bus stopped only once I think, when we reached Korat 3 hours in. At Mukdahan joined the queue for Lao bus tickets (50bt) and got a bus at 0730 for the quick run over the border. The bus was being loaded with goods being taken back over the border. Immigration at the bridge didn't take long, no queues. The only hold up was because at 0800 the Thai immigration police stopped for the usual Thai ceremony.

Casino hotel, the room itself was very nice but the complex is a bit far out of the town centre and set back from the road, nothing really to do there except gamble and maybe have a massage. Couldn't really see any other hotels on agoda that came even close to being well recommended by previous visitors.

I flew back from Ubon with Nok Air, about 1300bt for the flight. Minivan from Mukdahan to Ubon bus station was 105bt and took about 2 hours.

The consulate and border crossing was much quieter than when I have been to Vientiene but the tradeoff being Savanaket is a much sleepier place to stop over.

Thank you for all of your answers, how hard was it to get from ubon bus station to the airport?

Would i make it back to the airport in time for a 7:45 flight to BKK?

Motorbike taxi guy pounced on me as I alighted the Minivan - 100b to the airport, it was about a 10 minute ride. I probably should have tried to haggle in hindsight. Looked like there were plenty of (meter?) taxis waiting at Ubon bus station as well.

I forgot to answer your second question, yes you should be able to make it for the 1945 flight. On day 2 the consulate opened a bit earlier than expected at 1330 and not 1400 for everyone to collect their passports. There were tuktuks sitting outside the consulate and I shared one with some other farangs going to the bridge. Once we walked through Lao immigration there was a bus waiting on the other side of the booths to take us over the bridge and back to Mukdahan bus station. At Mukdahan bus station I didn't have to wait around for a connecting bus as there was already a minivan sitting in wait so this was why I got to Ubon airport at 1700. I am not sure if the minivans run to a schedule as such or they just go when they have enough people. Mine left the station with about 4 empty seats but he picked up a few people along the way as they tend to do.

It is a consulate, not an embassy.

Thus it is the same a business, a business in the business of selling visas and making profits on what they sell.

Different to an embassy.

So I believe.

Could be wrong.

Are consulates privately owned?

Yes there are privately owned consulates. I got my visa from the consulate in Hull UK and had to make the payment to a private Ltd UK company.

Hull is an honorary Thai consulate.

Savannakhet is an official Thai consulate. The official consulates around the world are shown at the bottom of this webpage. http://www.thaiembassy.org/main/

" It doesnt look like anything will change in the near future over there "

Things will probably change if you lot keep going on about it being "easy" and the "best place to get such and such"... etc etc

Why must you broadcast it and spoil a good thing - you think Thai immigration don't read the content on this website ?

Come on people - wake up !

Clearly, Thai immigration change their rules based on what's wrote on the Thai Visa forums, didn't you know?
