June 19, 201412 yr I post in another section but thought I might get more hits here... I know about Nielson Hays but membership cost way too much for me. Are there any cheaper options to borrow children books in english? I can travel anywhere in bangkok.
June 19, 201412 yr Did I understand this correctly? A two year membership at Nielson Hays cost 5000THB (£90 or $153) and you cant afford that, alternatively you're not prepared to make the sacrifices required to acquire the books for your child?
June 20, 201412 yr Author Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm here in bkk for 1.5 months as I normally live in chiangmai...thought since were here for the kids during the short summer break we could go cheaper.
June 20, 201412 yr I understand there is a library at central world which is ran by the government and has English books. Just as in Chiang Mai there is a library and also an outreach reading room in Kad Suan Kau on floor one I think. I have seen english books there as i have drank my very good 10 baht coffee.
June 20, 201412 yr buy a tablet, get all the books you want, portable. I carry a phablet, and can organize bedtime stories with the swipe of a screen, or just hand it over to the munchkins to read by themselves. You'd be surprised what you can get for free. [edit] The app you will need is called Aldiko, be your own library Oz Edited June 20, 201412 yr by ozsamurai
June 23, 201412 yr TK Park is the library on the 8th floor of Central World. You can do a 20 baht day pass to check it out. If you have a long-term visa or work permit, they will give you the Thai price (200/year). The non-Thai price is also reasonable at 400/year. http://www.tkpark.or.th/eng/intro/ There is also a smaller library on the 21st floor of the Elephant Tower called Apple Tree Library. You need to call first to make an appointment. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/302638859841847/ HTH
June 24, 201412 yr I suppose the idea of lending stuff (in this case books - even for young children) and expecting to get it back is something hard to comprehend in this part of the world, hence the dearth of libraries.
