anyone else completely pissed off with the current chaotic, and dangerous motorcycles that have now decided that the normal road is not adequate and driving at speeds in both directions on the side walks is perfectly normal and acceptable? I have only noticed it in the past few months, as I don't remember it ever being this bad, especially on Sukhumvit. Negotiating these idiots is almost like a computer game. I suspect that until a high ranking official or a HiSo gets seriously hurt, nothing will be done to protect the public (improbable, as neither are likely to be walking the streets). Anyone had any run ins or stories related to this?

Just needed to get that one off my chest......rant over!

Just kick them back to the road as they pass by. I have found that they like it.

This topic comes up often and apparently it is legal if the traffic is moving slowly or if there is a traffic jam. I'm sure a member in the know will be along to cite the relevant rule.

Been going on for years on Sukhumvit and nothing new. A couple of years ago between Soi 20 and 22 one was hauling towards Soi 22 and a Thai guy quickly stepped out and back in front of it causing to driver to react quickly and got the front wheel shake and lost control and went down, no one and I mean no one offered to help the driver who was hurt. For a fact some people were laughing. No one likes those guys.

THis has been commonplace in Bangkok and other places for decades; nothing new about it.

I am sorry for the OP.  I am glad you had the chance to have your rant.  It is perfectly legal and fine to do so in times of severe traffic.  If pedestrians are in my path, I give them the right-of-way.  I slow down.  Occasionally, you get the idiot who strolls along in front of a long line of motorbikes and blocks traffic.  Then, it's time to sound the horn.  In reality, do you think anyone likes to drive on the sidewalk?  The streets are pretty bad with potholes and all kinds of nonsense that can kill you.  The sidewalks are worse.  The bricks that make those sidewalks aren't ever properly secure.  You can hit one and cause it to go flying.  Sometimes that has already happened, leaving it sideways in front of you to damage your tire.  Maybe several of them have already been knocked out creating a massive pothole that we must navigate around.  It's an artform to get back onto the main road when and if traffic begins to move without getting turned into a pancake by a bus!  The pedestrians are the least of my concerns because I respect their right to walk on the sidewalk.  Again, I slow down.  I wait for them to move.  Occasionally, I even smile at them!  The only people who seem to get annoyed or pissed off are foreigners.  Have you ever seen the speed bumps on the sidewalk?  Why did they put them there?  Are they for pedestrians to slow down?

LoL!  Happy walking!

In the old days in Saigon, motorcycle "Cowboys" would sneak up behind you on the sidewalk, the rider on the back would snatch the watch off of your wrist and the driver would gun the 50cc Honda and pull away before you could run and catch them. Some clever soldiers started carrying walking sticks and as the motorcycle sped by, they smartly jammed the stick into the spokes of either the front or back wheel. The bike would stop abruptly and both young hoodlums would be thrown off. The incidences of the snatching of valuables by motorcyclists dropped dramatically. Personally, I was riding in a "Cyclo" on which the driver rode the bike in the back while two or three passengers rode in the seat in the front. I had my left arm on the armrest when two "Cowboys" came from behind and snatched the watch from my wrist. As the driver gunned the motor to pull away, I raised my loaded M-14, had the driver in my sights at a distance of about 15 yards, then snapped the safety off and hesitated. "What the hell it's only a watch," I thought and snapped the safety back on. They were two lucky kids that day!
I wonder if anyone in Bangkok has considered the utility of a carrying a hefty walking stick.

I wonder did the OP posted this as soon as he got off the plane? Plenty to look forward to OP. What'll your next post be? Dogs urinating on your white picket fence?

Motorbike taxi once told me it was a 400 baht fine to drive on a walkway/sidewalk. So I doubt it's legal.

A motorbike taxi once told me that lao khao tastes good.  Motorbike taxis say a lot of things.  They usually aren't the most intelligent people around.  While I don't have a specific link to the relevant verbiage, my understanding is that it depends on traffic conditions on the main road. If the main road is clear, then you obviously would have no need to drive on the sidewalk without trying to locate an address nearby.  That is out of order.  However, if traffic is at a standstill and the sidewalk remains the only viable option to proceed forward, it is okay.  Why else would they go to the trouble of putting speed bumps on sidewalks?

No it is legal.  I recently took the Thai motorbike license and this was one of the questions.  The answer was during heavy traffic it is legal to drive on the sidewalk.

Legal to drive motorbikes on the side walk, but illegal to go around a parked bus in the left lane.

Yeah, I was ticketed for going around a parked bus.

What ever...

You got a ticket for passing the parked bus on the left side? I also do it but that's very dangerous because passengers just jump out of the bus without watching. Sometimes the bus doesn't even stop on the most left lane and they just hop out like nothing can happen.

It's a Thai custom. You moved here, so get used to it.

I must say that as a bike rider it's very convenient sometimes. :) Sorry!

post 14 above is the answer. Illegal. He was the only one to prove a reference.

I took the test last year.  Unless they have changed the law which I doubt.

The law states that it is illegal only w/out "good reason" which is left up to the cop to decide

Oh? I would probably go to jail if someone pulled that shit on me.

It's LEGAL. I have many times followed police and been followed by police on sidewalks. You are in Thailand so suck it up Nancy.
