Australian tourist dies in Phuket villa pool

A 45-year-old Australian tourist has died after being found submerged in the swimming pool of a villa on Phuket's east coast.

The woman had been staying with her husband and other relatives at The Cape Yamu, described as an exclusive beachfront resort. She was discovered unconscious in the private pool at the villa where the family was holidaying.

Family members pulled her from the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, while emergency services were called, police said. Rescue personnel continued efforts to save her before taking her to hospital.

She was later pronounced dead despite the attempts by relatives, rescue workers and medical staff.

Police examine events before death

Police have opened an investigation to establish what happened in the period before the woman was found in the pool.

Officers are interviewing relatives and other witnesses, checking resort CCTV footage and collecting evidence. Authorities are seeking to build a full timeline before deciding whether further action is needed.

No official cause of death has been released. The woman's body will undergo a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.

Police have not said whether foul play is suspected. The investigation remains ongoing, with further details expected after witness interviews and forensic examinations have been completed.

Embassy notification expected

Officials are also expected to notify the Australian Embassy, in line with standard procedures after the death of a foreign national in Thailand.
