August 3, 201411 yr Thanks for the heads up, but you can use IE, you only have to add "garmin.co.tw" to Compatibility View Settings. You can find this under : Tools - Compatibility View Settings.
September 24, 201411 yr What?! pheemah - not able TO download what. Garmin Communicator? Why is Chrome necessary? MJCM - even with your alteration (which god only knows the reasoning behind), IE gets stuck downloading Garmin Communicator. With Firefox, Garmin Communicator installs alright but then the whole process bogs down as cannot register. "Must use Garmin Express to register". Which I did. But it seems that Garmin Express is not set up to update MAPS - only unit operating software. Garmin is so politically correct that it uses only Thai on some of its webpages. As if anyone outside this rotten hamlet can read THAI. Garmin and Thailand are a match made in heaven: Both absolutely FUBAR. GARMIN. NEVER AGAIN. Edited September 24, 201411 yr by Obb
September 24, 201411 yr I had a problem with my new Garmin device which I purchased in Thailand. I e-mailed Garmin/ Esri 4 times and not one reply. So I am like you Garmin , never again.
September 24, 201411 yr @Obb, I have no idea what you are doing wrong, but I got Garmin Communicator working in both IE and Firefox (see screenshots)
September 24, 201411 yr As suspected, using Chrome had no effect on the whole sorry mess that is Garmin. And that is Thailand. And that is the world. In Firefox, was able to download and install Garmin Communicator. However, GC is unable to detect my Nuvi. It is unable to detect it in Firefox and it is unable to detect it in Chrome. In any event, when I sign in to myGarmin, and try to register, it says I must register using Express, which I did months ago. And again today. Many tries later, still cannot get Communicator to detect my device. The Garmin Communicator troubleshooting FAQ leads one to an error page. How f*cking perfect this all is. Thanks for reading. I am mostly venting here. Am trying to get answers from f*cking useless Garmin - both in Taiwan and the USA. (In Thailand, just smile and pretend everything's OK. Until the wheel falls off and some innocent dies a gruesome death. Then just smile some more.) Seriously, you evil corporation, military supplier, bastards: GARMIN. JUST WALK AWAY. Edit: Now Garmin Communicator has recognized my device. Seems the device had to be connected when it was "off" (despite the pictures on the Garmin website.) But it keeps saying Manage your maps with Garmin Express. But Garmin Express does not seem to know about the Thailand Map Update. Has anyone been required and able to use Garmin Express for this goddam map update? Edited September 24, 201411 yr by Obb
September 24, 201411 yr You cant use garmin express to download these maps, you have to connect to the garmin.tw website with the communicator so you will get an unlock code and then you can download the map, which after download will install the map on your device. Where are you located? Try with firefox to change the useragent (as they sometimes have a problem with updated browsers).
September 24, 201411 yr OK, I go to the link in the Original Post. I click on Thailand, then City Navigator ... Up comes a goddam all-Thai page that, translated, says this: 1. Sign in with your account myGarmin.2 Install Garmin Communicator Plugin (Download GCP).3 Connect your device to your computer.4. equipment will be checked for updates as they become available. So I find a link to myGarmin and sign in. Communicator is already installed. I attach my Nuvi, it is recognized. I click on Manage Maps. There is no mention of the Thailand map update. And it says: Manage your maps with Garmin Express. <deleted> am I doing wrong?
September 24, 201411 yr With all this talk of Garmin I thought I would give mine a go. I am using the USB cable that came with the device , but when I open up any Garmin plug ins / map installers etc. it goes into search mode and cannot find my device.
September 24, 201411 yr I have been updating my Thai nuvi successfully, including this latest version. (1) chrome works for me, but likewise I have problems with Firefox. But insofar as I rely on google translate anyway, using chrome isn't such a big deal (2) you need to be clear that you're doing things relevant for "Garmin Thailand" and not "Garmin worldwide". If you're using Garmin express that says to me you have at some point in time run into instructions relevant for US units. For Thai nuvis and Thai maps, all you need can be obtained from www.Garmin.co.th (3) if its a password issue, remember that the "gpssociety" website is *not* part of Garmin per se, and any registration/password you have for that site is not what www.garmin.co.th wants.
September 24, 201411 yr With all this talk of Garmin I thought I would give mine a go. I am using the USB cable that came with the device , but when I open up any Garmin plug ins / map installers etc. it goes into search mode and cannot find my device. What does it show on the screen of your Garmin when the installers etc. say it cannot find your device? Some units take some time to load up properly into "mass storage" mode, some units actually require the user to tap a selection before it switches (and is "undiscoverable" until you do)
September 24, 201411 yr 1. Sign in with your account myGarmin. So I find a link to myGarmin and sign in. Communicator is already installed. I attach my Nuvi, it is OK what 1 should be saying, is warning/reminding that you need to sign in with the password that's registered as at my.garmin.com (not gpssociety). What you should click then is the "next" button. If your plugin is installed correctly then you'll get to a userid/password login. You don't need to leave www.garmin.co.th to go to my.garmin.com. (on my screens I actually don't see a link to my.garmin.com) I attach screenshots below. from main website to get to the map update page you click on the box on the lower left here: You should see this next if you clicked on the right link: So, obviously, you click "Thailand" and you end up here: And you then click on the "City Navigator" link. You'll get to this: If you're using Chrome you'll get an option to translate the page (I set mine to autotranslate; that's why I used Firefox for the Thai screengrab above) And then you'll get to here: For your userid/password. You'll be presented with the map once you clear this.
September 25, 201411 yr Thanks build6. I wrote a long reply to your post and tried to include screenshots of the continuing problems but the screenshots do not show up when I submit the post. Another 2 hours of my precious life wasted thanks to Garmin's steaming piles of undocumented, half-baked consumer excrement. Edited September 25, 201411 yr by Obb
September 25, 201411 yr Build6 , I now have everything as shown in your post , the Thai will not translate to English, So with a little help I get to the last page , but mine does not ask for name/password it wants to know my unlock code , whatever that is , I tried my serial no. my password but nothing
September 25, 201411 yr @Ne1. You only will get the Unlock code from the Webpage if you a- are connected with Garmin Communicator b- you are eligible to receive updates (Life Time Maps for example) If you are eligible you should send an email to [email protected] This is the support email for Garmin Taiwan they can help you. (You can send the email in English )
September 25, 201411 yr Whoa! Success! I have downloaded and am installing the map update. This morning I tried Chrome for Windows 8 64-bit (instead of the 32-bit version that did not work yesterday) and had a new problem wherein the Garmin site said "my system was not supported for Communicator" - or something along those lines. Out of shear bloodymindedness, I have just tried it again. For some reason, everything worked. Firefox seemed to be a no-go. Internet Explorer, the same. Why the 64-bit Chrome worked on the second try - and the 32-bit Chrome did not work - remains unknown. Indeed, the use of Chrome did seem to be essential. Thanks to all here. Obb PS Garmin in Taiwan were helpful. The dear souls at Garmin in Thailand are really struggling - partly with the language barrier. I would suggest Garmin just bite-the-bullet and make a consistent effort to provide support in English. (And certainly in Thai for Thai speakers in Thailand.) A mix of the two languages really doesn't work well.) Edited September 25, 201411 yr by Obb
September 25, 201411 yr Wow, good for you that you finally managed to do it, but I don't understand why you can't use either FF or IE. I managed to use both (but only after adding the Garmin site in Compatibility View in IE and changing the User-agent in FF) But oke, its good that you finally succeeded, but I sincerely hope that you wrote down how you did it for next time, because IMHO I think that a new map is coming out pretty soon (but that's just guessing on my part)And BTW I dont work for Garmin or any other company (this is just in case someone thinks otherwise) Edited September 25, 201411 yr by MJCM
September 25, 201411 yr Only answer is to buy a GPS with SpeedNavi. Telephone support that can almost speak english. 4hr turnaround in good english on email one free year of updates then 900 baht a year for about 4 a year Real ESRI maps. No comparison.....
September 25, 201411 yr WHAT THE ?!!! AFTER ALL OF THAT, THE NEW UPDATED MAP IS IN THE THAI LANGUAGE ONLY. GARMIN: YOU ARE JUST A BAD JOKE. Edited September 25, 201411 yr by Obb
September 25, 201411 yr The latest on mine is that I have to install the Garmin Communicator plug in , which I have done , downloaded it , installed it , spoke to it nicely . sent it flowers , offered to buy it presents . What happens when I hit the continue button , it tells me that I need to install the Garmin Communicator plug in. 3 times on the trot was enough , b*****ks to it now.
September 26, 201411 yr (1) Firefox doesn't work for me either. The plugin installs but during the search it can't be detected. I am running windows 7 64-bit but chrome 32-bit works for me. Have not tried chrome 64-bit. (2) thai-language only map means that you're using one of the lower end models (eg nuvi 40). Don't panic, if the system updated your map at all then you're eligible - what that means is that you need to contact ESRI and they can give you a CD with the English map version. That still needs you to have downloaded the Thai install so you didn't actually waste time. (3) ESRI Thailand has always replied every mail of mine. What I am thinking is that if your email to them is incoherent or "angry" they may ignore you (and rightly so). Do remember none of the people you will meet are the ones who set policy so shouting at them doesn't do anything other than demonstrate you're an <deleted>. (3) in my post with screenshots I should have noted that your GPS should already be plugged in, to "mass storage mode" if you have to choose it. (4) if its asking for an unlock code, what it says to me is that your GPS is not eligible for the map. Not every GPS is sold with a "lifetime upgrade" policy. I may be wrong, you need to contact ESRI with your serial number and ask (NICELY). The lifetime map update may or may not be worth buying. Its also possible to pay for a single update. And another poster has already mentioned that these guys are nice enough that if your GPS is too old to take the latest maps, they may even give you a slightly-older map for free.
September 26, 201411 yr In chrome, there should be an icon on the right on the address bar that you can click on to force a translation if it doesn't do it automatically. I don't have my computer with me now so I can't check but you should be able to google how to do this. Worst case just right click everywhere and see if you get an option
September 26, 201411 yr I have e-mailed them before it was about a different issue , it was polite and there was only one question . For them not to respond was rude and in keeping with the lack of customer service people encounter here.
September 27, 201411 yr build6 6 - spare us the lecture on proper behavior. Really think you should apologize. I, for one, have spent over 6 hours trying to do a simple map upgrade - and it's still not finished. Might one get angry at such a ridiculous mess perpetrated by Garmin on its customers? Well, some people are going to. Who could blame them. Of course it's the brain-dead management that is responsible. From all I've seen, Garmin Thailand is just a mess. Somebody who understands how to run a consumer products division needs to come in here and clean house. 1) Too many cooks (ESRI, Nostra, GPS Society, and others I have encountered but can't think of now) 2) Too much of their stuff is in Thai only. What is translated is only partial and poor. English at Garmin Thailand is barely adequate. 3) No proper documentation for these map upgrades, for example, and other things I have encountered over the years. Edited September 27, 201411 yr by Obb
September 27, 201411 yr If it helps try this documentation on downloading the map to your pc. I used Chrome 32 bit.The instruction for updating(ENG).docxOther than farting around with the password which it would not recognise ( so I simply generated a new account with a different email address) it all went smoothly. I did this yesterday after receiving the attached file from CS at the gps society. I went to them as I had not received a reply from Garmin Asia - I don't believe there is actually a separate Garmin Thai operation? The kind lady also sent me instructions to update the software to v5 on my Nuvi 2465 which had not shown up on Garmin Express...... My experience of the gps society with regards to replies and help is completely at odds with some of the more frustrated comments above. However I do agree that it is amazing that a company like Garmin are so bad at this facet of their business.
September 27, 201411 yr WHAT THE ?!!! AFTER ALL OF THAT, THE NEW UPDATED MAP IS IN THE THAI LANGUAGE ONLY. GARMIN: YOU ARE JUST A BAD JOKE. See my post above but after I had finished mine was also in Thai. I had to go into tools. settings, language and take a guess at what was English in Thai script. Changed that and it was all okay - apart from losing fuel usage data.....
October 6, 201411 yr WHAT THE ?!!! AFTER ALL OF THAT, THE NEW UPDATED MAP IS IN THE THAI LANGUAGE ONLY. GARMIN: YOU ARE JUST A BAD JOKE. CN Thailand NT 2014.20 [Eng] from ERSI (Thailand) Co. Ltd. is a very good English language map of Thailand. Edited October 6, 201411 yr by InterestedObserver
October 9, 201411 yr ESRI sent a DVD to fix the Thai-only map update. No computer would read the disc. ESRI is purportedly sending a new disc. They would not reply to my emails 'til I cc:d Garmin in Taiwan. PS. Who the flup is "GPS Society"? Sounds really classy - maybe they could use some of that sophistication to address the problems here. Edited October 9, 201411 yr by Obb
