More than 10,000 wild animals are killed every year on Highway 3259 in Chachoengsao

The National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department wants Highway 3259 closed to save lives of more than 10,000 wild animals a year.

Yoo Senatham (อยู่ เสนาธรรม), head of Khao Ang Reu Nai (เขาอ่างฤาไน) wildlife sanctuary in Chachoengsao said the two-lane road has had impact on wildlife in the area. Mr. Yoo said about 820 cars, 60% of them pick-up trucks, use this road daily and hit and kill many wild animals.

Statistics recorded that 14,408 animals, among them mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians were killed by vehicles in 1999, he said. In 2001, two elephants died after being hit by cars and in 2005 a motorcycle rider was killed by a wild elephant which itself also was killed later, Mr. Yoo said.

He said the road should be closed but admitted that will be difficult.
