any knowledge of 'the Pub', across the road from MAYA? sign says it's the best in CM, or at least was in 2012. LIke beer prices, loud raucous music, sports TV, grub, expat guys/gals or Thai mostly.

I was there last weekend for the first time and quite liked it. Half dozen or so of us watching ManU/Swansea, Guinness and Kilkenny on tap for the lowest price I've found in CM (199 thb). I liked that it has an outdoor seating area - covered - with fans. Met the owner, seemed nice enough, classic rock playing during the breaks in the games. I'd go again.

Guinness at 190 in the night bazaar pub. How much at the new sports bar? Edited by Chiengmaijoe

I have asked 3 times now, no response yet. This is over a 3 day period. Not winning many fans.

news flash: i have just been told i have to go in to see the prices...all i did was ask how much a Guiness pint was...Lost me, before it even began.

I think I paid 250 Baht (+7%) for a pint of Guinness last Sunday

If that's the case will stick with The Pub and UN Irish.

A pity with The Game being a stones throw from my door.

I have been to UN pub and i will go to The Game any day. cold beer, 14 tvs, air conditioning, nice staff, and the food is delicious.

So i take it you haven't been to The Game yet? Life isnt about prices my friend. Enjoy life

Like yourself, my decision about where to go when I'm going out is not based on price, unless somewhere is incredibly over-priced. The Game is a bit expensive, but if it ticked all the boxes for me it's not so expensive that I wouldn't go. Unfortunately for the bar, plenty of people in Chiang Mai do make their decisions with price as the main factor. For some, it appears that that is there only criteria. Bless 'em.

Price is an important criteria for many.

If the place is going to be full of people sneering at those that even consider cost, for me I'd avoid the place even if they were giving the beer away.

You have a very lively imagination and wonderful principles.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't want to share a beer with that. The "Bless 'em" just screamed "Don't drink beer with him".

Don't put off going there because of me as it's very unlikely that I will be going. It's too far out for me and I'm only really interested in football and I have a good enough place to go to to watch that. You're a bit quick to judge, but that's not enough for me to judge you by. You're probably alright otherwise.

Don't assume anything. I've been.

I won't write it off just yet, but the signs are there, seen them too many times before here.

Lets see what happens in time.

For those of you who don't frequent the Bangkok local forum, TV member frankwhite - who is on this thread recommending The Game - is almost certainly the manager and/or owner of The Game in Bangkok. Whenever there's a thread on the Bangkok forum asking "what's the best (pub/breakfast/hamburger/place to watch sports/etc.) in Bangkok", frankwhite invariably recommends The Game. Now he's here...recommending The Game.

I called him on it in this thread but he never responded: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/715340-best-full-english-breakfast-in-bangkok/page-8

Wow i guess i must be your obsession if you need to review my past posts and try to be sherlock holmes. I am not affiliated with the game, however i an friends with the gm/chef and i am supporting what they do. Against the law??

I guess u think its still Thailand 1980 before they taxed imported beer. Also do u know the thai govt. put a 14% sin tax on alcohol last yr??? So you can not make a profit selling $2 beers. You want items from outside thailand you pay for it.

It's called "constructive criticism" Frank, not gossip. If you or "the game" had of answered the questions on price it wouldn't have gone so far.

The real sin tax will be an empty establishment with an attitude like that.

Though i hope it does well.

Cheers.

The congratulations are appreciated, but possibly a little bit unwarranted. I did say "unless somewhere is incredibly over-priced", and I did say "if it ticks all the boxes , it's not so expensive that I wouldn't go". My point is, that so long as somewhere is offering something a bit different then I don't mind paying a bit more , but it would still have to be what I consider as value for money, which of course is subjective and different for everyone.

The reason I posted was to highlight the fact that this is not Bangkok, with loads of executives earning expat salaries , with big expense accounts that would go to a place like this and as such, the likeilhood of it's success is low.

To further highlight the difference between Bangkok and Chiang Mai I also mentioned the countless people here that seem to use price as the sole criteria, many of whom are regulars on this very forum.

I've heard guys complain about being out with the penny-pinchers and how they've embarrassed not only themselves but their friends. I don't about you, but back home I don't think I ever met anyone that went into a bar and asked the barman 'how much is a Heineken, how much a Singha, is that for a big one?". There are people here that wouldn't go to places, like The Pub and UN Irish because it's too expensive, they can get a big one for that price in the village, and there's a place that does 4 big Changs for 129 baht, blah, blah, blah.

If somewhere is selling four beers for 129 baht I would go there if it was a place I wanted to go to, but I wouldn't go there just because of the price. When I go out, my decision is based on what I want....... Live music, good food, a place by the river, Live sports, or whatever. It is never just because it is cheap, and I haven't yet come across a place that is so expensive that if I liked the look of the place, I would walk out.

This place may well be a bit expensive for CHiang Mai, but as I said before, if it ticked all the boxes.... etc. If the place turned out to be nothing special, offering nothing different to anywhere else, I might then consider it to be expensive, relatively speaking, but having not been there, I wouldn't judge it purely on price, as some people do. Bless 'em.

Fair comments, Chiengmaijoe, agree with most of what you say, and I also wouldnt want to be embarrassed when out socialising. The fact about Chiang Mai, though, unlike Bangkok is that most of the foreign residents are living here in retirement and generally most people would be living on quite a bit less than pre retirement days, and as a result, budgets do have to be balanced.

As for The Game, I still want it to succeed despite early teething problems, but in order to do so, the owners will have to take a look at pricing strategies because Chiang Mai is not Bangkok, and what they seem to have done so far is replicated everything from their place on Sukhumvit Road including, crucially, prices. In order to succeed, a place surely has to work around and alongside the competition, and unless theres something totally unique, which in this case there isnt, people will make choices based on value for money, and as many have pointed out, there are loads of places where you can comfortably watch sports, whilst drinking cheaper beer and eating decent but cheaper food!

I m not a fan of the expression "market forces" but in this case its a direct and crucial issue. The Game is convenient for me because I live less than ten minutes away, but if the place is to attract people to drive from the city centre, or the other side of town, it will have to make people want to go there, and so far none of that is happening. In simple terms, there needs to be a full range of the sports people want to see (they are available, as the UN Irish proves), reasonable priced drinks, not just happy hours which end at 6pm, and right now the food looks OK but is being charged out at Bangkok not Chiang Mai prices.

The other thing crucial to success is to have a streetwise sports geek who not only knows whats on, but also how to get it (and I dont mean illegal streams which could be dangerous for them with the law). People should be able to walk right in five minutes before a particular event starts, be it The Ryder Cup, or Formula 1, or important football games, confident in the knowledge that it will be onscreen without needing to ask staff to look for stuff!

Pretty much sums it up.

First I wish this new venture the best. Over the years business from Bangkok and Pattaya have tried to expand to Chiang Mai and business from Chiang Mai have tried to expand in Bangkok and Pattaya both directions they failed. Demographics of these two regions are polar opposites. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give the success rate a 4.

No import tax on Heinekens and Tigers........I was paying 2 usd for Dos Equis Lager Pints in Midtown Phoenix, happy hour 4 pm to midnight, lots of free food. Strip club down the street had 1 USD Heinekens, Stella Artois, Michelob Amber Bock from 11am-noon, with free cheeseburger/fries, 2 for 1 from noon to 7pm, and 5 usd prime rib dinner on Thursdays. http://www.macayo.com/about-us/history.php in business 68 yeasrs. http://cheetahsaz.com/ in business 20 years.

When I'm in Northern Virginia, which is a super high cost of living area; I pay 2.50 for a pint of Yuengling....oldest brewery in America....that ends at 7 pm.

I can afford to eat or drink anywhere I want but unlike some posters on this topic, I have a problem with being overcharged for products and services in general.

Whenever a business sees it can get away with charging exorbitant prices/fees, then other businesses in the area are open to follow suit. Before you know it, everyone thinks it is okay to raise their prices because in comparison they are still reasonably priced. The best way to stop this from happening is not to patronize establishments that overcharge for what they provide and deliver and I think this is a prime example.

I'm sure the monthly expenses to run and operate The Game are quite hefty but if they are going to have any chance to succeed, then they are going to need a steady flow of customers and the only way they are going to get that is by bringing their prices down to a level that seems reasonable to the majority and not just a few. I'm sure you will continue to see more specials being run and whether that works only time will tell.

I d like to congratulate Chiengmaijoe who, based on his comments must be the only person in CM who doesnt take account of prices! Most of us mere mortals work within a budget of some description and certainly have to take account of what things cost!

My point is, that so long as somewhere is offering something a bit different then I don't mind paying a bit more

Joe, maybe I'm missing something, but what is a bit different about burgers and drafts? I did 5 large Leos for 199 last night, plus 10 satay sticks, grilled to perfection for 50 THB. I admit, I am on the cheapskate list, but no one on this planet can say I owe them one Baht, and the people I do business with show me respect like I show them; or I will no longer be a customer. I maintain a 770 credit score, and fully insure myself for medical expenses. I wonder how many of the 200 per pint crowd can say that? Drunken sailors annoy the piss out of me. Sure, first of the month they'll be wasted, buying rounds, then need to be put on a leash or carried home, then by then end of the month, they are requesting credit "until the first" from mom and pop stores. Absolutely pathetic.

It was covered pretty thoroughly in a thread titled: Update on 40 THB Large Leos. Born on 10 August, last night.
